                        NEWS ADVISORY:
        PRESIDENT OF GALLAUDET TO KEYNOTE CONFERENCE ON
  MENTAL HEALTH CARE FOR PERSONS WHO ARE DEAF/HARD OF HEARING

	I. King Jordan, president of Gallaudet University, will give 
the keynote address at a one-day conference, “Effective Clinical 
Intervention with Persons Who Are Deaf/Hard of Hearing and 
Mentally Ill,” on Monday, Nov. 16.  Gallaudet, located in 
Washington, D.C., is the world’s only university for deaf and 
hard of hearing undergraduates.

	The conference, sponsored by The Ohio State University 
College of Social Work and the Ohio Department of Mental Health, 
will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., at the Fawcett Center, 
2400 Olentangy River Road.  The conference is the second in a 
series designed to assist clinical practitioners (such as social 
workers, nurses, psychologists and counselors) in providing 
mental health services to clients who are deaf/hard of hearing.

	Jordan will speak during the morning session, following 
introductory remarks by Michael F. Hogan, director of the Ohio 
Department of Mental Health; Tony Tripodi, dean of the College of 
Social Work; and Edward Ray, interim provost at Ohio State.  His 
talk will be followed by a panel discussion featuring three 
professionals: one hearing and two deaf/hard of hearing.

	During the afternoon, there will be four concurrent 
workshops addressing identifying and overcoming barriers to 
effective intervention.  The topics are: Psychology and Deafness: 
Implications for Mental Health; Older Adult Deaf/Hard of Hearing 
Person; Mental Health Assessment of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing; and 
Deaf Culture and Implications for Intervention.
