OHIO STATE RENEWS TIES WITH INDIA--Jan 17-23.  Ten 
representatives of Ohio State, led by Board of Trustees Chair Ted 
Celeste and President William E. Kirwan, will visit India Jan. 
17-23 to establish and renew ties with several Indian 
universities and research institutes.  From the linkages 
officials hope to develop study-abroad language programs, 
facilitate faculty and graduate student exchanges and long-term 
research programs, and explore possibilities for joint degree 
programs.  The group also hopes to facilitate Ohio business and 
cultural connections with India.  U.S. Ambassador Richard Celeste 
will host a reception for the delegation.  The group includes: 
President Kirwan; Ted Celeste and his wife, Bobbie Celeste; 
Daniel Slane, trustee; Bobby Moser, vice president for 
agricultural administration and dean of the College of Food, 
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; David Ashley, dean of 
the College of Engineering; Kermit Hall, dean of the College of 
Humanities; Richard Gunther, director of the Center for 
International Studies and executive director of International 
Studies; Rattan Lal, professor of soil science; and David Hansen, 
director of the Office of International Programs in Agriculture 
and associate dean of the College of Food, Agricultural and 
Environmental Sciences.

STUDENTS BOOST LITERACY PROGRAM--Jan. 18:  The OSU AmeriCorps 
Literacy Programs are sponsoring a Martin Luther King Jr. Day 
Read-A-Thon Monday (1/18). The event is in conjunction with the 
Columbus Children’s Hospital Reach Out and Read Program.  
AmeriCorps, housed in the College of Education, will have readers 
from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at six locations: Half-Price Books, 1375 W. 
Lane Ave.; Children’s Hospital Close to Home Primary Care Unit, 
Third Floor; Children’s Hospital Close to Home East, 899 E. Broad 
St.; Hilltop Library, 511 S. Hague Ave.; Karl Road Library, 5590 
Karl Rd.; and Whetstone Library, 3909 N. High St.

UNIVERSITY HOLDS MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. CELEBRATIONS--through 
Jan. 18. Ohio State will honor Martin Luther King Jr. with a 
number of events.  Students will perform community service duties 
at several locations through Jan. 18.  The volunteer activities 
include serving lunch and cleaning up at the Pauline Home for the 
Aged and the Martin Janis Senior Center, and supervising and 
interacting with youngsters at several locations.

Paula Innis, president of Full Court Press, will be the keynote 
speaker at a luncheon celebrating the memory of King Monday, Jan. 
18, 12:30-2:30 p.m. in the Ohio Union Stecker Lounge.  The 
luncheon is sponsored by the Minority Service Leaders Program, a 
leadership development program for ethnic minority students at 
Ohio State.

DUCHESS OF YORK VISITS MEDICAL CENTER--Jan. 26.  Sarah Ferguson, 
the Duchess of York, will visit the OSU College of Medicine and 
Public Health and University Hospitals on Jan. 26.  She will also 
speak at a luncheon to benefit the University Medical Center’s 
Spirit of Women projects and the development of a bionutrition 
program.  Media will have four opportunities to photograph and 
videotape the duchess; however, she will not be available for 
interviews or to answer questions.  Media must preregister by 
Jan. 20 to attend any of the events.  For a complete schedule and

THE HISTORY OF HISTORY--Jan 26.  History Professor David Cressy 
will present From Counting Crosses to Telling Tales: Social 
Science History and History in the Humanities, at the College of 
Humanities third Inaugural Lecture of the year on Tuesday (1/26) 
at 7:30 p.m. at the Faculty Club, 181 S. Oval Drive.  Cressy will 
relate his own development as a historian to major changes that 
have taken place within the historical discipline, beginning with 
the history of early modern England, and concluding with a 
remarkable story from the archives involving a woman who 
allegedly gave birth to a cat.

WEXNER CENTER LAUNCHES THE FOLD--The Wexner Center for the Arts 
has joined forces with the Department of Art to create an online 
forum for ideas about the arts.  The Fold --
www.wexarts.org/thefold -- features four conceptual spaces and 
explores connections between those concepts.  Scholarly research, 
artists’ projects, discussions and more are presented on the 
site.  The site will change as new material is developed.
