Friday 2/5-Monday 2/8 - It seems simple enough: pay workers more and they’ll be satisfied with their salaries. But research at Ohio State suggests that satisfaction doesn’t always rise with pay. Rob Heneman, a professor of management and human resources at Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business, looked at nurses in at Midwestern hospital and found that satisfaction with work didn’t rise at a constant rate along with pay. He says managers should make sure they understand whether, in rewarding performance, employees want higher salaries or other benefits. (rescheduled to make way for breaking news Jan. 25)

Monday 2/8-Wednesday 2/10 - Ohio State University researchers are teaching sign language to infants and toddlers to help them communicate even before they have the skills to say words. The children, ages 6 weeks to 3 years at the A. Sophie Rogers Infant and Toddler Lab School have normal speech and hearing skills--most are just too young to verbalize. Kim Whaley, a professor of human development and family science and curriculum coordinator at the lab, says the children are less frustrated and have found new ways to express their needs. For example, they are using the sign for ‘stop’ instead of hitting another child, and using the sign for ‘more’ to indicate they want more food.

Wednesday 2/10-Friday 2/12 - People are more likely to support assisted suicide if there is direct physician involvement in helping people end their lives. That’s one finding of a study by Ohio State University Sociology Professor William MacDonald. More than half the 514 Ohioans asked said they would support assisted suicide if doctors took an active role, such as administering a lethal injection. MacDonald says the results indicate there may be disagreement between the general public and leaders of the assisted suicide movement. (rescheduled from 1/27)
