STATEMENT FROM THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY

The arrest last night of a suspect in the recent violent crimes in the Ohio State University neighborhood comes as a tremendous relief to all members of this community. We are grateful to the Columbus Division of Police for their tireless efforts to solve these crimes. Their dedication and professionalism, cooperation with the university, and concern for the safety of all residents is much appreciated.

Over the past several years, due to efforts on all sides, there has been increasing cooperation and respect among police and safety organizations in the city and on campus and in the University District. This collaboration has been evident throughout the past month as Columbus Police took the lead in investigating the series of crimes and worked with the other groups to offer safety advice to students and other residents. The collaboration to enhance safety in the university area will continue, and the university and law enforcement officials strongly urge students and other residents to follow safety recommendations.

The person arrested is not a currently enrolled Ohio State student. However, he did attend classes at the University for two quarters, Autumn 1997 and Winter 1998. This connection adds to the sadness and regret the university community feels about the situation.
