TRUSTEES ACCEPT ENDOWED FUNDS, APPROVE APPOINTMENTS
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees on Friday accepted 28 named endowed funds, approved appointments and reappointments, and conducted other business.
Board accepts 28 named endowed funds
The board heard a report from Jerry A. May, vice president for development, on fund-raising efforts, including the establishment of the Thomas L. Payne Agricultural Ecosystems Research Fund. Some $3 million will support research and related activities focused on agricultural ecosystems for growing, processing and providing renewable resources and for the related management of social, economic and ecological resources. Awards will be for start-up funds, equipment and research infrastructure support at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster.
May also reported the establishment of 27 other named endowed funds with gifts totaling more than $7.85 million:
-- The Raymond C. Firestone Endowment Fund, $2.55 million, providing discretionary funds for the university president.
-- The Honda Fund for Engineering Academic Enrichment, $1.5 million, for activities or purchases to enrich engineering students' education experience.
-- The Bess Krag Musser Graduate Fellowship Fund, $159,895, providing support for a graduate fellowship in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
-- The College of Veterinary Medicine "Class of '63" Endowed Fund, $55,703, supporting for an endowed chair in ophthalmology in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
-- The R.T. and J.P. Ramsay Scholarship Fund, $47,591, providing scholarships for undergraduate students majoring in the sciences.
-- The Charles L. Spohn Jr. Graduate Award Fund, $27,550, supporting a graduate assistant for the director of the Marching Band.
-- The Fay Graduate Fellowship Fund in Environmental Sciences, $25,860, providing scholarships for the environmental sciences graduate program in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
-- The Robert K. Graham Ophthalmic Optics Fund in Optometry, $25,000, supporting research and study in ophthalmic optics in the College of Optometry.
-- The OARDC Wooster Campus Beautification Fund, $25,000.
-- The Secrest Arboretum Director's Fund, $25,000, providing support for the Secrest Arboretum at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster.
-- The Central Florida Alumni Scholarship Fund, $15,660, providing scholarships for graduates of central Florida high schools.
-- The Joseph F. and Mary Stranges Scholarship Fund, $9,085, providing scholarships for participants in the Freshman Foundation Program.
-- The Donald D. Mayhew Memorial Fellowship Endowment Fund, $1.5 million, providing support for a student fellowship within the Chadwick Arboretum.
-- The Sanford G. Price and Isabelle Price Barbee Scholarship Fund, $1 million, providing renewable undergraduate, graduate and professional student scholarships.
-- The Herb and Dee Dee Glimcher Visiting Professorship Fund, $325,000, providing support for a visiting landscape architecture professor in the Knowlton School of Architecture.
-- The Mary M. Yost Scholarship Fund, $157,182, providing scholarships in the College of Education.
-- The Lida Shriver Nursing Scholarship and Research Fund, $116,125, providing scholarships and research awards in the College of Nursing.
-- The Gerald and Elizabeth Williams Undergraduate Honors Program Fund, $34,313, providing scholarships and program support for the Fisher College of Business.
-- The Jack W. Kennedy Scholarship Fund, $33,244, providing scholarships in the Fisher College of Business.
-- The Russell Klein Innovation Fund Endowment, $32,908, providing program development in the Fisher College of Business.
-- The Richard and Margaret Knowlton Scholarship Fund, $31,080, providing scholarships to undergraduates from Logan County, Ohio.
-- The Anita and Michael Goldberg, Rite Rug Company and its Founder, Duke Goldberg, Endowment for Cancer Research Fund, $30,000, supporting of cancer research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center -- Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute.
-- The George W. Broughton Natural Resources Program Fund, $25,500, providing support natural resources programming via University Extension in southeast Ohio.
-- The John Glenn Institute Endowment Fund, $25,100, providing program and activity support for The John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy.
-- The Paul H. Rofkar Scholarship Endowment Fund, $25,000, providing scholarships in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
-- The William and Dolly (Ardath) Saxbe Endowed Fund for the Arts, $25,000, providing discretionary funds for the dean of the College of the Arts.
-- The Carl F. Mayer Scholarship Fund, $22,400, providing scholarships in the Knowlton School of Architecture.
Appointments and reappointments
Trustees appointed Karla S. Zadnik of WORTHINGTON, associate professor of optometry, to the Glenn A. Fry Professorship in Optometry. Zadnik joined Ohio State's faculty in 1996. She received her Doctor of Optometry degree in 1982 and her Ph.D. in 1992 from the University of California, Berkeley. The Glenn A. Fry Professorship Endowment Fund was established in 1983, and the professorship itself in 1992, in honor of the late Fry, professor emeritus of optometry. The endowment supports a professorship in physiological optics.
The board also appointed the following department chairs:
