Here are descriptions of the radio stories available on the Ohio State University Info Line, February 12 through February 19, 1999. Stories are changed at noon on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. If you need a re-feed of a missed story, please call Amy Murray at 614-292-8385.

Friday 2/19-Monday 2/22 - When it comes to shopping, higher income shoppers may be bigger bargain hunters than lower-income consumers. New research by Ohio State University Business Professor Robert Leone shows that higher-income consumers are more likely to take advantage of bargain prices on certain items by stocking up -- and buying less of these goods when prices rise. Low-income consumers have less cash available to take advantage of discounts. Leone says high income people have the cash available to buy more when prices are low or buy a more expensive brand that is on sale.

Monday 2/22-Wednesday 2/24 - A new intelligence test can help diagnose a number of learning disabilities, including Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) in children. Ohio State University Education Professor Jack Naglieri, co-author of the Cognitive Assessment System (CAS) test, says other tests can’t effectively detect ADHD, even though they are sometimes used for that purpose. He says children with ADHD scored significantly lower than average on a measure of planning ability--the ability to determine, select and use strategy to solve a problem. He also says the test can be used to improve classroom performance.

Wednesday 2/24-Friday 2/26 - A healthy dose of garlic in the diet may prevent hardening of the aorta and benefit overall cardiovascular health. A study by Harisios Boudoulas, a professor of internal medicine and pharmacy at Ohio State, finds that subjects who took garlic supplements had more elastic aortas than those who did not. He says the aortas of 70 year old subjects who took garlic were as elastic as the aortas of the 55 year olds who didn’t take garlic.

All feeds include one wraparound report of approximately 1:00 and at least one other actuality plus background material. If you have questions or want additional information, call Amy Murray at 614-292-8385.
