COLLEGE OF EDUCATION INDUCTS 4 INTO HALL OF FAME--March 5. Three noted educators and a respected inventor will be inducted into the Ohio State University College of Education Hall of Fame at 8 p.m. March 5 in the Faculty Club, 181 S. Oval Dr. The 1999 inductees are Frederick Cyphert, retired dean of the College of Education, who pioneered the study of deans as educational leaders; Thomas Stephens, executive director of the School Study Council of Ohio, for his contributions to educating gifted children; 1933 alumnus Robert Studebaker, inventor of laser technology and founder the LaserPlane Corp. in Dayton; and Lonnie Wagstaff, education professor at the University of Texas, who is researching the best way to teach low-income Hispanic children in Texas schools.

EXHIBIT LOOKS AT SACRIFICES WE MAKE TO ATTAIN THE IDEAL BODY-- March 5-20. Bodies Under Siege, a gallery exhibit of amazing and sometimes outlandish ways in which bodies have been shaped and modified by clothing, underwear and shoes over the years, opens Friday (3/5) at the Columbia Gas Student and Alumni Center, Campbell Hall, 1787 Neil Ave. A project of the Body Image and Health Task Force at Ohio State, the exhibit examines "ideals" of beauty and the personal costs of pursuing them, artwork by people who have survived body image disorders, and various interactive displays to explore how we feel in our bodies.

STUDENTS DEDICATE EMERGENCY PHONE PROJECT--March 6. Ohio State students will gather at 1 p.m. Saturday on East 14th Avenue to dedicate the first off-campus emergency telephone in the memory of Stephanie Hummer, a freshman who was abducted and killed in 1994. The dedication will begin at the Evans Scholars House, 52 E. 14th Ave., with remarks from university and city representatives. A procession will then lead to the phone location at the corner of East 14th Avenue and Pearl Alley--the site of Hummer's disappearance. Evans Scholars, a group of golf caddie scholarship recipients, and Undergraduate Student Government are sponsoring the project. Hummer was an Evans Scholar; the ceremony marks the fifth anniversary of her death. The dedication launches a pilot project to place at least seven emergency phones in off-campus locations.

PROVOST ADDRESSES UNIVERSITY SENATE--March 6. Executive Vice President and Provost Edward J. Ray will deliver an address to the university's governing body at 9 a.m. in 103 Kottman Hall, 2021 Coffey Road. Ray's speech is titled Priorities, Processes and Constraints.

HELIX WELCOMES STUDENTS TO CAMPUS--March 6. HELIX, the College of Biological Sciences' undergraduate honor society, will host 250 outstanding high school seniors and their parents from around the state on Saturday (3/6). In its 18th year, this program is organized and run by College of Biological Sciences honors students and their faculty advisers. It is the major undergraduate recruiting event of the year for the College. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in Campbell Hall, 1787 Neil Ave. A formal program with student presentations follows from 9-10 a.m. Students and their parents then tour labs in the college's six departments.

OHIO STATE MOTORSPORTS AT THE AUTO SHOW--March 6-14. The Ohio State-sponsored truck that raced last year in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck series will be on display at the Columbus International Auto Show at the Columbus Convention Center. Ohio State's logo adorns the cars of three alumni who are professional race drivers as part of the new Ohio State Motorsports program. Lonnie Rush, Jr., 1989 graduate, raced the truck in the season- ending event at Las Vegas last October. The Motorsports program raises awareness and support for Ohio State's Center for Automotive Research and the Student Projects motorsports program.

WOMEN AND WORKPLACE ISSUES TOPIC OF DISCUSSION SERIES--March 8. The Fisher College of Business is launching a series of discussions on women and workplace issues with a panel discussion from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ohio Union Conference Theatre, 1739 N. High St. The Glass Ceiling--Real or Imaginary? will be moderated by Ohio University Provost Sharon Brehm and feature panelists Jean Patrick, executive vice president of marketing for WW Williams; Michelle Reese, associate partner at Andersen Consulting; and Kamilla Sigafoos, chief operating officer of the Ohio State Medical Center.

ENGLISH PROFESSOR OFFERS THOUGHTS ON "SMARTS"--March 9. Professor Valerie Lee, Departments of English and Women's Studies, will present "Smarts" at the College's fourth Inaugural Lecture of the year on Tuesday, March 9, 7:30 p.m. at the Faculty Club. Using cautionary tales about knowledge and learning from African American folklore and literature, Lee will discuss the promise and predicament of being a scholar caught between notions of education and "edumacation," or how smarts (noun) smarts (verb).

(SHHHHH!) KIRWAN TO SURPRISE AWARD-WINNING FACULTY--President William E. Kirwan will drop in unannounced on unsuspecting faculty members during the next week to notify them that they've won one of the three highest awards that faculty can receive at Ohio State. Kirwan will interrupt classes or meetings to present a Melrose apple (developed at Ohio State in 1944) and his congratulations to winners of the 1999 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Distinguished Scholar Award and the Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service. The awards recognize superior teaching, exceptional scholarly accomplishments and contributions to development of policies and programs. Reporters are invited to accompany Kirwan on one or more of these visits. LAW CONFERENCE LOOKS AT IMPACT OF WELFARE REFORM ON CHILDREN-- March 12-13. While adults are the focus of most discussions on welfare reform, the 1997 law is also changing life for millions of children who are welfare recipients. Experts from around the country will discuss The Implications of Welfare Reform for Children March 12-13 at the College of Law, 55 W. 12th Ave. The two-day symposium will focus on the legal, medical, economic, health and policy ramifications of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (the Welfare Reform Act). There are four panel discussions: Friday at 2 p.m. and 3: 45 p.m., and Saturday at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Most speakers will be available to reporters after their presentations.

1,400 DEGREES TO WINTER QUARTER GRADUATES--March 19. Richard Klausner, director of the National Cancer Institute, a component of the National Institutes of Health, will serve as commencement speaker during winter quarter graduation ceremonies March 19 in St. John Arena. Some 1,400 degrees will be awarded in the ceremonies, which begin at 9:30 a.m. Recognized as one of the 20 most highly cited scientists in the world in the field of biology and biomedical research, Klausner has authored more than 280 scientific articles and several books. His primary research interests include the molecular basis of iron metabolism in humans, the mechanisms of gene regulation, tumor suppressor genes and receptor biology.
