ALAN GOODRIDGE TO BE EXECUTIVE DEAN OF ARTS & SCIENCES

COLUMBUS -- Alan G. Goodridge, dean of the College of Biological Sciences at The Ohio State University, will assume additional duties as executive dean of the university’s Colleges of the Arts and Sciences. Executive Vice President and Provost Edward J. Ray has announced that he will recommend Goodridge’s appointment to the university’s Board of Trustees at the board’s next meeting April 6. The appointment will run from March 29, 1999, to June 30, 2001.

Goodridge, 61, of DELAWARE, will succeed Kermit Hall, dean of the College of Humanities, who recently was named vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost at North Carolina State University.

“I am confident that Dean Goodridge can provide the kind of energetic and effective leadership to the arts and sciences cluster that marked Kermit Hall’s term, while continuing his outstanding leadership of the College of Biological Sciences,” Ray said.

The arts and sciences cluster consists of five colleges: Arts, Biological Sciences, Humanities, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. The executive dean serves as a point of contact for issues involving all the colleges and coordinates activities among them, including convening meetings of the deans of each college.

“I thank Dr. Ray and my fellow arts and sciences deans for their confidence in me,” Goodridge said. “I look forward to working with them and others in the university to continue our improvement of the student experience.”

A professor of biochemistry whose research specialties include study of metabolism, endocrinology and molecular biology, Goodridge came to Ohio State from the University of Iowa in 1996, when he was appointed dean of the College of Biological Sciences here. He headed Iowa’s Department of Biochemistry from 1987 to 1996, and was a professor of biochemistry and pharmacology at Case Western Reserve University for 10 years prior to that. He earned his doctorate at the University of Michigan and his undergraduate degree at Tufts University. He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
