MOVIE OFFERS POURING IN FOR BUCKEYE WEAR--The premiere of “The Out-Of-Towners” offers Ohio State fans a familiar look. In the opening scenes, the parents of an Ohio State student bid him farewell in an airport bedecked with Buckeye banners and actors wearing Ohio State hats and other clothing. The movie is one of more than a half-dozen “projects” offered each year to Trademark and Licensing Services. The office reviews scripts for movies and TV pilots that call for Ohio State garb as props. Among the scripts recently approved: Kevin Costner’s upcoming baseball movie, “For the Love of the Game,” (they asked to use a hat), “House Arrest” with Jamie Lee Curtis, “A Family Thing” with Robert Duvall, an episode of the “New Love Boat,” and “Living Single.” Scripts are submitted to the office 12-18 months in advance and are turned down if inappropriate.

STUDENTS COMPETE IN BRIDGE-BUILDING CONTEST--April 9-10. Not only do civil engineering students have to make it strong--they have to build it quickly at the Ohio Valley Regional Steel Bridge-Building Competition, April 9-10 at the University of Kentucky (Lexington). About a dozen students in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science have been working on the 1:10 scale model steel bridge since September. At the competition, they’ll try to assemble the structure in the least time possible. It will be tested for stiffness, weight, aesthetics, efficiency, economy and construction speed.
