STUDENTS COMPETE IN BRIDGE-BUILDING CONTEST--April 9-10. Not only do civil engineering students have to make it strong--they have to build it quickly at the Ohio Valley Regional Steel Bridge-Building Competition, today and Saturday (4/9-10) at the University of Kentucky (Lexington). About a dozen students in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science have been working on the 1:10 scale model steel bridge since September. At the competition, they’ll try to assemble the structure in the least time possible. It will be tested for stiffness, weight, aesthetics, efficiency, economy and construction speed.

TRAFFIC ALERT: SCHOTTENSTEIN CENTER EVENT PARKING IS AT FAIRGROUNDS--April 15. Some 14,000 people are expected to attend the Peter Lowe Success 1999 event Thursday (4/15) at the Jerome Schottenstein Center. The event, which features a number of motivational speakers, including Colin Powell, runs from 8 a.m. to about 6:30 p.m. Because Ohio State classes are in session during this time, there is very little campus parking available for conference attendees. The only event parking on campus is in the Schottenstein Center lots, and those spaces are very limited. There is no event parking in other campus lots; anyone parking in those lots without an OSU parking tag will be ticketed. Ticket holders are being asked to park at the Ohio Expo Center (state fairgrounds) at 17th Avenue and I- 71. Continuous shuttle bus service will run between the fairgrounds parking lots and the Schottenstein Center, beginning at 6 a.m. and continuing as long as needed, probably until about 8 p.m. University students, faculty and staff, and other drivers in the area should expect heavy traffic on route 315 and I-71 during the Thursday morning and afternoon commutes. Organizers of Peter Lowe’s Success 1999 urge people attending the event to park at the fairgrounds, carpool and allow plenty of time. Lunches will be available on-site and within walking distance of the arena.
