
TRUSTEES ACCEPT ENDOWED FUNDS, APPROVE APPOINTMENTS
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees on Friday (6/4) accepted named endowed funds, approved several appointments and reappointments, and approved board committee assignments. The board also conducted other business.
Board accepts 16 new named endowed funds
Trustees heard a report from Jerry A. May, vice president for development, on fund-raising efforts, including the establishment of 16 new named endowed funds with gifts totaling almost $950,000.
-- The Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education Development Fund, $38,660, providing support for the College of Education.
-- Donald G. Lux Scholarship in Technology Education, $25,000.
-- Lawrence County 4-H Endowment Fund, $15,000.
-- The Executive Committee Award for Outstanding Administrative, Clerical, and Secretarial Performance, $5,000, providing support for awards in the College of Humanities.
-- The John D. Hathaway M.D. and Besse D. Hathaway Memorial Fund, $279,991, supporting medical scientist training in the College of Medicine and Public Health.
-- The Ohio State University Foundation Unrestricted Endowment Fund, $157,808, providing resources for fund-raising at Ohio State.
-- The Cardiology Recruitment and Development Fund, $150,563, supporting faculty recruitment in the Division of Cardiology.
-- The Richard E. Durst University Scholars in Chemical Engineering Fund, $49,172, providing merit scholarships in chemical engineering.
-- The Katherine Miles Durst University Scholars in Early Childhood Development Fund, $49,172, providing merit scholarships in early childhood development.
-- Dominic J. Bagnoli, Jr., Scholarship Fund, $26,840, providing football scholarships with preference to student- athletes majoring in pre-med.
-- The John R. Jacob University Scholar Fund, $26,500, providing merit scholarships, with preference for students from the Canton, Ohio, area.
-- The William and Anne Altschule Professional Student Scholarship and Endowed Fund in Pharmacy, $25,000.
-- The Lloyd Roberts Evans Endowed Scholarship in History, $25,000.
-- Robert M. James and Donna B. James Scholarship Fund, $25,000, providing football scholarships, with preference given to wide receivers.
-- The Smith Family Athletic Endowment Fund, $25,000, providing scholarships to varsity student-athletes.
-- Langdon T. Williams Scholarship Fund, $25,000, providing athletics scholarships, with preference given to those majoring in chemical engineering.
Appointments, reappointments
The board approved the appointment of Lee C. Tashjian, Jr. as vice president for university relations, effective July 1. Tashjian, 53, is vice president for communications and public affairs at Atlantic Richfield Co. He will be Ohio State's chief executive for public relations, communications and marketing, responsible for developing, implementing and coordinating the university's marketing and communications strategies.
A native of Wilmington, Del., Tashjian is an Ohio State alumnus. In 1975, he was hired by International Harvester in Indianapolis as public relations manager for its truck division. After six years of increasing responsibility with IH, Tashjian moved to the DuPont Corp. in Wilmington, Del., where he spent the next 15 years, rising from public affairs consultant to vice president for public affairs and finally executive assistant to the president. In 1995, he left DuPont to become vice president for corporate relations at the Fluor Corp. in Irvine, Calif. After two years, he was recruited to Atlantic Richfield (ARCO) in Los Angeles.
At Ohio State, Tashjian will manage a central staff of more than 40 people and will partner with communications offices across the university. He will coordinate internal and external institutional marketing and communications activities for the university, and will be responsible for positioning the university to its key audiences and informing its publics about the benefits Ohio State offers and the services it provides.
Trustees approved several reappointments, all effective July 1, 1999, through June 30, 2003. They are:
-- Jack A. Boulant of WORTHINGTON, to the Fred A. Hitchcock Professorship in Environmental Physiology.Keith W. Bedford of UPPER ARLINGTON was reappointed as chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science, effective July 1, 1999, through June 20, 2001.
