
TRUSTEES ACCEPT ENDOWED FUNDS, APPROVE APPOINTMENTS
PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees, meeting at F.T. Stone Laboratory on Gibraltar Island, on Friday (7/2) accepted named endowed funds, approved appointments and reappointments, and conducted other business.
Trustees accept nine named endowed funds
The board heard a report from Jerry A. May, vice president for development, on fund-raising efforts, including establishment of The Edgar C. Hendrickson Fund. Gifts of $1.78 million from the estate of alumnus Edgar C. Hendrickson will support teaching and research in the College of Engineering.
May also reported on the establishment of eight other new endowed funds with gifts totaling more than $400,000.
-- The Austin J. and Jessie Wilson Endowment Fund, $15,615, supporting the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
-- The Edward P.J. Corbett Fund, $103,504, supporting graduate students in the Department of English.
-- The Joan N. Huber Social and Behavioral Sciences Faculty Fellowship Fund, $100,000, supporting faculty research in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
-- The Harold I. Richard Agricultural, Environmental and Development Economics Scholarship Fund, $79,995, providing scholarships for undergraduate students in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
-- The Lynda and Stephen Nacht Endowed Scholarship in Education, $50,000.
-- The Robert Godfrey Arend Family Athletic Scholarship Fund, $32,906, supplementing grant-in-aid scholarship costs of a punter or place-kicker on the football team.
-- The Bob Gano Scholarship Endowment Fund, $25,000, supporting students in the Department of Animal Sciences.
-- Tanakadate Aikitu Prize Fund, $25,000, supporting students in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures.
Appointments, reappointments
The board appointed David A. Hirshleifer to the Ralph W. Kurtz Chair in Finance, effective July 1. Hirshleifer previously was the Merwin H. Waterman Collegiate Professor of Finance in the School of Business Administration at the University of Michigan.
Trustees approved the appointment of Timothy S. Knowles as vice provost for minority affairs, effective Aug. 1. Knowles currently is vice president for student and campus support at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn.
The appointment of Nancy H. Rogers of UPPER ARLINGTON to vice provost for academic administration, effective July 1, also was approved. Rogers is the Joseph S. Platt - Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur Professor in the College of Law.
Trustees reappointed Daryl L. Siedentop of WESTERVILLE as interim dean of the College of Education, effective through June 30, 2000.

-- Reviewed President William E. Kirwan's performance during his first year and deemed it "exceptional." He was given $16,000 in annual deferred compensation in lieu of a raise to his regular salary, which is $275,000.
-- Approved 160 grants totaling $11.9 million for research projects funded in May.
-- Approved the continuation of computer laboratory fees in the Fisher College of Business, the College of Engineering, and the School of Public Policy and Management, all at 1998-99 levels.
