PRESIDENT KIRWAN PLAYS HOOPS WITH YOUNG SCHOLARS--July 29. As
all 259 participants in Ohio State’s Young Scholars Program wrap
up their annual summer institute on campus, President Kirwan will
join them for a picnic and basketball tournament. Scholars will
close out the two-week-long Samuel Dubois Cook Summer Scholars
Conference on Thursday (7/29) from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Lane
Avenue Park, at the corner of Lane and Kenny Road. The Young
Scholars Program provides year-round academic, personal and skill
development opportunities for economically disadvantaged Ohio
minority youth. Its main objective is to increase the number of
students from underrepresented minority groups who enroll and
succeed in colleges and universities. The 259 Scholars on campus
come from nine Ohio cities.

OFFICIALS TRY TO MAKE INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL SAFER--More than
100,000 faculty, students and staff travel internationally each
year from colleges and universities across the country. Reports
of serious crimes, with students as victims, are of significant
concern to college and university administrations. In an effort
to enhance safety and security awareness for traveling academics,
Ohio State recently hosted a meeting of representatives from the
Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC), Department of State,
campus public safety officials and representatives of
international studies organizations. As a result, a special
committee of OSAC is being formed. OSU is one of a select group
to receive information from the State Department about travel
safety. Ohio State also provides briefing materials to
travelers, a travel safety folder and a 24-hour emergency contact
point. Other colleges and universities are now adapting OSU’s
program.

MEDICAL CENTER OFFERS HEALTHY MEAL ADVICE TO AREA RESTAURANT--A
nutritionist at The Ohio State University Medical Center and the
chef at the Buckeye Hall of Fame Cafe are working together to
develop three new, healthy entrees for the restaurant’s menu. It
is one of the first partnerships between a medical center and
restaurant to ensure healthy food choices. Shirley Kindrick,
director of the Comprehensive Weight Management Program at the
OSU Center for Wellness and Prevention, worked closely with chef
Robert Larsen of the Buckeye Cafe to create dishes with no more
than 600 calories, 10 grams of fat and at least three grams of
fiber. The result: new entrees of soba pasta, orange basil
chicken, and grilled chicken with fruit sauce.
