Friday 8/13-Monday 8/16 - Here’s a question for sweet corn lovers. When do you cook the corn for maximum sweetness? Mark Bennett, associate professor of horticulture and crop sciences at Ohio State, says corn tastes sweetest when you husk and cook it immediately after picking.
Monday 8/16-Wednesday 8/18 - Although it’s popular to complain about suburban sprawl, an Ohio State professor says in a new book that the suburban lifestyle is what most Americans want--because it suits our values. John Simpson, associate professor of landscape architecture and natural resources, is author of Visions of Paradise: Glimpses of Our Landscape’s Legacy. He predicts that despite the popularity of suburban living, Americans will eventually find the lifestyle too isolating.
Wednesday 8/18-Friday 8/20 - Most financial advisers tell people saving for retirement to spread their risk by investing in several types of mutual funds. But a new study reveals that relatively volatile small-stock funds are the best bet for people who make steady, periodic contributions in investments for a long period of time. Sherman Hanna, a professor of financial management at Ohio State University, says small stock funds are the way to go. Hanna has found that you always come out better with more aggressive stock funds as long as you have a 20-year time frame before retirement and are a periodic investor.
