Friday 8/20-Monday 8/23 - After nearly three months of late nights and drowsy mornings, it’s time to return to school and early morning wake-ups. Dr. Charles Pollack, a sleep disorders specialist at Ohio State University, advises a gradual readjustment to the new schedule. Pollack says children who aren’t conditioned to waken a little earlier each morning may find it difficult to roll out of bed and could find it harder to stay awake in school.

Monday 8/23-Wednesday 8/25 - When should doctors call for a helicopter to fly heart attack survivors to a bigger hospital? Air transport of hospital patients is expensive, but little real research has been done to prove that it actually benefits patients. Now a new study of patients who have suffered cardiac arrest suggests that air transport is only useful in some cases. Howard Werman, a clinical associate professor of emergency medicine at Ohio State and medical director of MedFlight, a Columbus-area hospital helicopter consortium, looked at records of patients flown to hospitals in Columbus. Werman says that nearly half of patients whose heart attack was caused by heart disease survived, while the survival rate was only 14 percent for patients whose cardiac arrest resulted from causes like electrocution, inhalation or near-drowning.

Wednesday 8/25-Friday 8/27 - Returning to school means returning to packing lunches for your student. Sharron Coplin, an extension associate in Human Nutrition and Food, offers parents tips for packing lunches. She says keep it simple and don’t pack too much food.
