
TURKISH STUDENTS HOLD BENEFIT DINNER FOR EARTHQUAKE RELIEF--Aug.
27. A benefit dinner tonight (8/27) will highlight earthquake
relief efforts by the Ohio State University Turkish Students’
Association (TSA). The dinner will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. at
Royer Activities Center, 85 Curl Drive. The association will
sell Turkish food and collect monetary donations for earthquake
relief. The TSA has set up an account at Bank One for earthquake
relief funds. All donations received for earthquake relief will
be given to the Turkish Red Crescent (similar to Red Cross) for
the purchase of food and medical supplies. The TSA also will
collect donations at a table at Easton Town Center through the
week. The Office of International Education and the Middle East
Studies Center at Ohio State are aiding the Turkish Students’
Association in its efforts.

STONE LAB HOLDS OPEN HOUSE--Aug. 28. The F.T. Stone Laboratory
on Gibraltar Island will host an open house on Saturday (8/28)
from noon to 4 p.m. (raindate is Aug. 29). It’s a rare
opportunity to tour the lab and learn about Lake Erie and the
many programs and research projects conducted at the facility.
Established in 1895, Stone Lab is the oldest freshwater
biological field station and research laboratory in the United
States. There will be guided tours, hands-on learning displays,
and representatives from Ohio Sea Grant to answer questions. In
addition, there will self-guided bicycle tours of South Bass
Island (bring your own bicycles). Tours of Gibraltar Island
leave every half-hour from the Stone Laboratory Research
Building/State Fish Hatchery on South Bass Island. For more

BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETS--Sept. 1. The University Board of
Trustees will meet at the Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River
Road, on (NOTE THE NEW DAY) Wednesday, Sept. 1. Committee
meetings, where most discussions take place, begin at 9 a.m. The
full board meets at 10:30 a.m. in the Alumni Lounge.

JOHN F. WOLFE IS SUMMER COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER--Sept. 2. John F.
Wolfe, Dispatch Printing Co. chairman and CEO and publisher of
The Columbus Dispatch, will deliver the commencement address
during Ohio State’s summer ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 2.
Approximately 1,400 graduates will receive degrees during the
ceremony, to be held in St. John Arena. Commencement begins at
9:30 a.m.

STUDENTS PRESENT IDEAS FOR COLUMBUS PLANNERS--Sept. 2 The
Northland/Polaris Mall issue and the Columbus warehouse district
have been analyzed this summer by teams of students in the City
and Regional Planning section of the Austin E. Knowlton School of
Architecture. The teams will present results of their field work
on local planning problems at 1:30 p.m. Thursday (9/2) in the
Brown Hall Gallery, 190 W. 17th Ave. Students in the class are
from OSU and the Technical University of Dresden (TUD), Ohio
State’s sister university in Germany. The Columbus-Dresden
research and seminar series explored sustainable urban growth in
North America and Europe. OSU students traveled to Dresden in
spring; the German students are ending their two-week stay on
Sept. 2. Cross-national groups will use poster displays to
present ideas on four local planning issues.

MUMS FOR SALE--Sept. 3-4. The Ohio State University Chadwick
Arboretum will sell mums, asters and other fall-blooming
perennials at the 7th Annual Founders’ Day Mum Sale. Plants are
available on Friday (9/3) from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday (9/4)
from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the north corner of Dakan Hall at the
corner of Lane Avenue and Fred Taylor Drive. Proceeds benefit
operations of the Chadwick Arboretum.
