NOBEL WINNER GIVES LECTURE--Sept. 30. Nobel Laureate Sidney Altman will present The Nature and Uses of an RNA Enzyme on Thursday (9/30) at 9 a.m. in Rhodes Hall Auditorium. Altman, Sterling Professor of Biology at Yale University, conducted groundbreaking and controversial research in 1971 showing that RNA, in addition to its role in translating a cell’s genetic material into proteins, also serves as an enzyme. This research began a revolution in understanding how the body’s genetic function works and led to the Nobel Prize. Altman’s three-day visit and seminar are sponsored by the Department of Biochemistry and made possible by a grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. Professor Altman will be available for brief interviews immediately following the seminar.

MBA STUDENTS BUILD, TEACH AND LEARN AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL--Oct. 1.
The 147 Ohio State MBA students are leaving their Fisher College of Business classrooms on Friday (10/1) to help make the Trevitt
Elementary School playground in Columbus a little more fun.
They'll also be working with the students on language, math and
science tutorials; learning games; and other activities such as
apple pie making, outdoor map painting and games. While some OSU
students help build outdoor play equipment, others will be in the
classrooms with the students or outdoors on large group activities. This annual service project begins around 9 a.m. and is expected to conclude at 2 p.m. This project is funded by a $10,000 grant from the Xerox Corp. and additional funds from the Fisher College of Business. Trevitt Elementary is located at 519 Trevitt Street.

J.C. WATTS, DEBORAH PRYCE TO VISIT OSU, ADDRESS STUDENTS--Oct. 1.
Congressman J.C. Watts Jr., R-Okla., will be joined by U.S. Rep.
Deborah Pryce, R-Ohio (15th District, which includes the
university), and three other House members for a free, public event with Ohio State students at 6:30 p.m. Friday (10/1) in the Ohio Union Ballrooms, 1739 N. High St. Ohio State is the first stop of a national college tour led by Watts, who will deliver a speech urging students to become involved in public service. Also attending are Republican Congressmen Rick Lazio of New York, John Thune of South Dakota and Jim DeMint of South Carolina. The five will appear at a news conference at 4:15 p.m. Friday in the Ohio Union Stecker Lounge; media are requested to be in place by 3:45. A mult box will be provided at both sites. After the news
conference, the representatives will tour the Frank W. Hale Jr.
Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave. The College Republicans of OSU are hosting the events.

WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY BEGINS AT OSU--Oct. 2. Ohio State’s newest
varsity sport begins on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. when the first puck is
dropped in the history of Ohio State women’s hockey. The Buckeyes open with an exhibition game against Guelph, Ont., and start the season Oct. 8 against Northeastern University. Head Coach Jackie Barto says the schedule allows athletes to grow and develop against the top competition in the country. Ohio State is a member of the Women's Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The schedule showcases 24 contests against league foes Wisconsin, Minnesota, Bemidji State (Minn.), Minnesota-Duluth, Minnesota State-Mankato and St. Cloud State. Six conference matchups will be played on home ice at the OSU Ice Rink.

“CARTOONING AIDS AROUND THE WORLD” ON EXHIBIT AT OHIO STATE--
through Jan. 21. Cartooning AIDS Around the World, an exhibit
surveying 43 international AIDS cartoons, is on display at Ohio
State’s Cartoon Research Library’s Reading Room Gallery through
Jan. 21, 2000. The library is located underground at the north end of the Wexner Center complex. Organized in 1992, the exhibit
toured 29 venues throughout the United States before it was donated to Ohio State’s Cartoon Research Library earlier this year. The library is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours vary between terms and on holidays.
