1998 Selective Investment Process
President Kirwan

It is with great pride that we present to you the first recipients of Ohio State's Selective Investment Awards.

These departments-Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, and Psychology-are among the finest in their fields and in the university and possess strong faculties, solid programs, and clear visions for the future. They will each receive up to $500,000 in central funding which, when combined with matching college and departmental funding, will help them make even greater contributions to their disciplines, their students, and to the people of Ohio and the nation. Profiles of each department appear in this document.

The Selective Investment Initiative was announced in July 1997 by Richard Sisson, former Senior Vice President and Provost, and the late Edward F. Hayes, Vice President for Research. In announcing the Initiative, Dr. Sisson and Dr. Hayes commented, "As good as we are-and we are very good in many areas and exceptional in some-we have an obligation to our students, to the citizens of Ohio, and to ourselves to continue the movement to even higher levels of achievement and preeminence. We are poised to assume positions of national and international leadership in additional areas of intellectual activities. We can achieve these levels and realize this potential if we are deliberate, strategic, and creative in the decisions we reach and the choices we make."

Proposals were solicited from the colleges. The Selective Investment Evaluation Committee of preeminent faculty members, chaired by Dr. Pascal Goldschmidt of the College of Medicine and Public Health, reviewed the proposals through an extensive and rigorous process, which is described on page four of this document.

The investments we are making in these departments will, we believe, have broad impact throughout other departments and disciplines, and in the lives of our students and the citizens of Ohio. We believe their continued efforts for excellence are in the highest traditions of The Ohio State University.

W. E. Kirwan, President
Edward J. Ray, Senior Vice President and Provost
