It is with great pride that we present to you the recipients of Ohio State's 1998-1999 Selective Investment Awards. Academic excellence is at the heart of all we do at Ohio State, and this year's recipients— Chemistry, History, Neuroscience, and Political Science—are among the finest in their fields and possess strong faculties, solid programs, and clear visions for the future. They will each receive up to $500,000 in central funding which, when combined with matching college and departmental funding, will help them make even greater contributions to their disciplines, their students, and to the people of Ohio and the nation. Profiles of each department appear in this document. Provost Ray

The Selective Investment Initiative was begun in 1997 in order to identify some of our strongest departments and programs and to give them the resources they need to move to the very top of their fields. Four departments were selected for awards last year: Electrical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Physics, and Psychology. The recipients are selected, in part, because of the impact they can have on other academic programs and because of the benefits they can offer to the people and businesses of Ohio.

Proposals were solicited from the colleges. The Selective Investment Evaluation Committee of preeminent faculty members, chaired by Professor Bunny C. Clark of the Department of Physics, reviewed the proposals through an extensive and rigorous process, which is described on page four of this document.

We are indeed proud of the work of the Selective Investment recipients and present them to you as exemplars of the highest standards of achievement at The Ohio State University.
