The front door of Ohio State's web site, in addition to serving as the starting point for university information, promotes stories and events related to the university's key initiatives of diversity, outreach and engagement, research, and academic excellence. The main image area of our front door (or "splash feature") is a constantly changing reflection of the broad array of people and events that make up Ohio State. Three features are in a random rotation at any one time, promoting the most current stories and events to our many audiences.

Splash Feature
The New Media Unit of University Relations researches and collects features to splash on the front door from a variety of sources: Ohio State's Research Communications, Media Relations, and Internal Communications departments, as well as other campus communicators. Faculty, staff, and students are also welcome to submit ideas for front door promotion. Keep in mind that osu.edu is Ohio State's "public face," our first impression. For that reason, promotional items need to be of broad, general appeal to our many constituencies. Also, strong, dynamic visual elements (i.e., work created by professional photographers, designers, or artists) are a necessity. We reserve the right to refuse art that doesn't meet this criteria. (Headshots, a speaker at a podium, group handshakes or clip-art don't generally make for strong visuals.)

Beyond splash features, the front door houses three current news links which promote events to a wide audience (osu.edu logs over 100,000 unique visitors a day). These are useful during periods when a large number of events are competing for a finite amount of front door space. While we try to accommodate as many worthy events in line with the university's priorities as we can, this is for certain: ample lead time (a minimum of a month for planned events) and great imagery helps, as does electronic content in place on your end (so we have somewhere to drive visitors).
