TO: Faculty and Staff

FROM: Edward J. Ray, Executive Vice President and Provost

Like President Holbrook and all who are part of this community, I am deeply saddened by the tragic fire that occurred in the 17th Avenue student residence early Sunday morning. I join with her in sending our heartfelt sympathies to the families and friends of those who died. We are also very concerned about those who were injured and those who were displaced by the fire.

The Office of Student Affairs is taking the lead in addressing the most immediate personal needs of affected students. In addition to students residing in the immediate area of the fire, many other students are no doubt affected by reason of friendships with the victims. I am certain that faculty members who have affected students in their classes will be sensitive and flexible in helping students deal with this very difficult situation in the coming days. Vice Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Studies Martha Garland is available to assist you with any special arrangements that may be needed for your students.

Thank you for your compassion at this difficult time.
