Respiratory therapists are licensed healthcare professionals who provide testing, treatment and care to patients who have difficulty breathing. The causes of breathing issues include cardiopulmonary disorders such as heart failure or pulmonary hypertension, chronic respiratory issues like asthma, COPD or cystic fibrosis, and emergencies like heart attack and drowning.
Our graduates are trained to work with the full spectrum of patients, from infants to the elderly. Therapists work in many different settings including intensive care units, emergency departments, diagnostic laboratories, clinics and the home.

Respiratory therapy is a growing field because of our aging population and a rise in respiratory conditions and cardiopulmonary diseases. In fact, the Department of Labor estimates that employment will increase by 23 percent in the next eight years. The median annual salary for respiratory therapists in 2016 was $58,670.

The Respiratory Therapy baccalaureate program at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio has continued accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
