About the Speaker

Mary Maloney graduated with a BS in landscape horticulture from Ohio State in 1979, but she discovered her passion for trees much earlier: when she planted her first tree on Arbor Day with her kindergarten class at Como Elementary School in Columbus. She has been a tree activist ever since.

Mary was hired as the volunteer and education coordinator at Chadwick Arboretum & Learning Gardens in 1994, and was appointed director in 2008. She oversees the garden operations of over 60 acres of plant collections and a 3.5-acre research lake. A leader in organizing the mapping and inventory of trees on Ohio State’s Columbus campus, she continues to work with the Office of Energy and Environment and the President’s and Provost’s Council on Sustainability to develop tree care protocol, securing the legacy of trees on the ever-changing campus. Ohio State received the prestigious Tree Campus USA certification on Arbor Day 2012 as a result of these efforts.

Mary continues to engage with undergraduate and graduate students in horticulture and in allied fields. They use the arboretum as a platform for research, teaching and outreach.
