From sophisticated cities and verdant terroir to world-class dining and native wildlife, this 11-night journey highlights some of Australia’s most celebrated and off-path destinations. Begin in the waterfront metropolis of Sydney to experience the grandeur of Sydney Harbour, tour the Opera House and visit The Rocks and sweeping Bondi Beach. Unwind in the Hunter Valley wine region while savoring fine vintages and gourmet dining. Travel to Adelaide in Southern Australia to taste regional specialties, sip chilled Riesling and explore Kangaroo Island’s unspoiled habitat, rich with sleepy koalas, sea lions and wallabies. On Australia’s southeast coast, discover cosmopolitan Melbourne, where cafes, jazz clubs and wine bars pepper artsy laneways. Roam the city’s stately Fitzroy Gardens and see the Queen Victoria Market, the largest open-air market in the Southern Hemisphere. Cap off your adventure in tropical Cairns, the gateway to the world's richest marine source - The Great Barrier Reef. Arrive at Sydney International Airport. Proceed through immigration to the baggage claim area and retrieve your luggage. After completing customs, AHI FlexAir passengers traveling on flights that qualify for the group arrival transfer and Land Program passengers who have purchased seats on the group transfer should exit the baggage claim area and proceed to the designated meeting spot, where an AHI Travel representative will meet them. The meeting location will be provided with your final documents.

Transfer and check in to Four Seasons Hotel Sydney. Please note if you arrive at the hotel before check-in time, your room may not be immediately available. A preregistered room may be blocked for an additional cost for immediate check-in, depending on availability.

Discovery: Sydney Orientation Walk. Welcome to Australia, or “Oz” as locals affectionately call their country! Gather for a short orientation walk and discover the highlights and sights near your hotel. Located in the heart of the CBD, you are just steps away from Circular Quay, The Rocks District and many more of Sydney’s must-see spots and restaurants.

Meet your fellow “Down Under” travelers tonight during a Welcome Reception at the hotel, followed by a Welcome Dinner.

A full American-style buffet breakfast will be served at the hotel each morning.

Discovery: Sydney City Tour. Embark on a panoramic tour of this cosmopolitan city. Travel along Macquarie Street to see Sydney’s Parliament House, the old mint building and Hyde Park. Visit Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair for views of Sydney Harbour; travel through Kings Cross and other neighborhoods; and enjoy grand panoramas of Sydney from special viewpoints along the way. Gaze at the beautiful stretch of golden sand along Bondi Beach, and see Centennial Park, one of Sydney’s most popular urban parks.

Enjoy lunch at leisure during your city tour. Some traditional Aussie foods worth trying include sausage rolls, savory meat pies and kangaroo burgers topped with pineapple and beetroot.

Free Time: Following your city tour, you may choose to be dropped off at The Strand, Sydney’s bustling shopping arcade, for souvenir hunting or afternoon tea. Adventure enthusiasts may enjoy walking over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Built during the Depression, this bridge saved many families from starvation because of the number of people needed for its construction. Today the bridge is called “the Coathanger,” and it commands stunning views of the harbor.

Enrichment: The Early Aborigines. The Aborigines’ rich culture stretches back at least 50,000 years, making them one of the oldest continuous civilizations in the world. Learn more about these fascinating indigenous people and how their rich history has influenced Australia’s culture, language and modern society.

During dinner at leisure, consider exploring some of Sydney’s terrific dining establishments.

Discovery: Sydney’s Opera House and Harbour. Journey beneath the white sails of Sydney Opera House, Australia’s most iconic landmark, located on Bennelong Point. Designed by Jørn Utzon, the structure was completed in 1973 and was surrounded by controversy during its construction. The venue has several different theaters including the Concert Hall, which has the best acoustics of any man-made building of its type in the world, the Joan Sutherland Theatre, the Drama Theatre, the Studio, the Playhouse and the Northern Boardwalk. Learn about the self-cleaning roofs, and see the venue’s remarkable interior, built from pink granite, wood and brush box plywood. Following lunch at leisure, embark on a cruise through beautiful Sydney Harbour. Sit back with some sweet treats and a glass of sparkling wine as you sail past coves, marinas and impressive mansions hugging the shores. Along the way, take in sights of the Royal Botanic Garden, the historic naval base of Garden Island, Taronga Zoo and other highlights.

Dinner is at leisure this evening. Perhaps take the opportunity to dine on fresh seafood – prawns are a local specialty – and indulge in a few Lamingtons for dessert. These delectable Australian cakes are dipped in chocolate and coconut.

After breakfast, depart for the airport for a short flight to Adelaide, located in South Australia. Upon arrival, transfer and check in to Mayfair Hotel Adelaide.

Free Time: Unpack in your hotel and relax for the afternoon, or begin exploring your neighborhood with a walk through the Riverbank Entertainment Precinct or Rundle Mall. You may also wish to visit the pretty Botanical Gardens or consider browsing the Art Gallery of Central Australia.

Enrichment: European Discovery and Settlement. Take a narrative ride through history as you review Australia’s interesting past from its discovery by Dutch sailors in 1606 to the establishment of its first settlement.

Join your group for a delicious dinner at the hotel.

Discovery: Flavors of South Australia. Prepare your inner foodie for a flavor-filled sojourn today. Begin at Adelaide’s Central Market, a winner of the 2016 South Australian Tourism Awards. More than 80 traders feature local cheeses, fresh bakery items, specialty coffees and teas, and mouthwatering farm to table produce. You may even stumble upon a sampling of Pavlova, a tasty meringue treat topped with fruit and whipped cream. Then head south to McLaren Vale, South Australia’s renowned wine region. Recognized as one of Australia’s oldest and greatest wine regions, McLaren Vale boasts storied wine traditions that date from the 1830s. Due to its mostly Mediterranean climate and multiplicity of soil types, this region produces a wide array of grape varieties. A few of the more popular world-class wines found in McLaren Vale are shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, grenache and mourvedre. Visit a cellar for a tour and learn about the vintages produced in the area. At a local inn, enjoy a tasting and lunch.

Free Time: After returning to the hotel, you have the remainder of the day to make your own discoveries. For dinner at leisure, you may enjoy trying a meal featuring cheese from the Barossa Valley or local lamb.

Discovery: Kangaroo Island. Hop aboard a ferry and cruise from Cape Jervis to Kangaroo Island, a delightful island home to many species not found anywhere else in Australia. See lazy sea lions and playful pups on Seal Bay, which boasts Australia’s third largest sea lion colony. Sea lions are an endangered species and are endemic to South and Western Australia. After your encounter with these incredible creatures, enjoy lunch at Vivonne Bay, a beautiful white sand beach with a unique curved shape. In Flinders Chase National Park, you may spot koalas, wallabies, possums and other wildlife in their natural habitats. Also see the geological wonders of signature landmarks Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. Be sure to take a few selfies here! As your adventure on Kangaroo Island draws to a close, depart for Kingscote airport for a short flight back to Adelaide.

Following breakfast, transfer to the airport for a flight to Melbourne, located in the state of Victoria.

Upon arrival in Melbourne, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

Discovery: Melbourne Highlights. “The Economist” voted Melbourne as the world’s most livable city for six years. Discover its charming atmosphere and captivating locales for yourself during a panoramic tour of the city’s highlights. See the Shrine of Remembrance, built to honor Australians who died in global conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Roam stately paths in Fitzroy Gardens and see Cook Cottage, Captain Cook’s childhood home. See Melbourne’s sporting areas and travel to the eclectic beachside suburb of St. Kilda.

Enrichment: Australia Today. Gather for a discussion about Australia’s current state of affairs.

Dinner tonight is at a local restaurant. Join your group, and share your favorite experiences thus far.

Discovery: Lanes and Arcades of Melbourne. Experience the pulse of Melbourne and explore its vibrant heart during a walking tour of Melbourne’s labyrinthine alleyways. See local artisans, al-fresco eateries, trendy cafes, tucked-away restaurants and stylish boutiques. Along the way, appreciate the unique and colorful street art and architecture.

Free Time: Spend lunch and the remainder of the day at leisure. History aficionados may wish to visit Old Melbourne Gaol where the notorious Ned Kelley was hung. Take a walk through Flinders Street Station, or visit the National Gallery of Victoria to see collections from Asia, Europe, America and Oceania.

Depart Melbourne this morning for a flight to Cairns (pronounced “Cans”), located in the tropical north of Queensland.

Upon arrival, transfer and check in to Shangri-La Hotel, The Marina, Cairns.

Lunch is at your leisure this afternoon.

Discovery: Orientation to Cairns. Join your AHI Travel Director for a walking tour of downtown Cairns to see the waterfront, surf shops and local eateries.

Free Time: Spend the remainder of the afternoon and evening at leisure. Perhaps take a stroll along the palm-fringed Esplanade and visit the lagoon.

Choose one of Cairns’ many establishments for dinner on your own this evening.

Discovery: Great Barrier Reef – World Heritage Site. Travel north to Port Douglas, nestled between the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree National Park. Cruise on a catamaran to the edge of Australia’s continental shelf to the ribbon reefs of Agincourt Reef. The Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stretches more than 1,800 miles along the northeast coast of Australia and is the Earth’s only natural structure that can be seen from outer space. Embrace the opportunity to swim and snorkel within this unique ecosystem. Relax in the sunshine, and delight in an up-close encounter with myriad fish, coral and plant life at the underwater observatory. Enjoy a buffet lunch during your excursion.

Following your Great Barrier Reef adventure, return to Cairns and have dinner at leisure.

Free Time: The day is yours to explore on your own. Walk to the Esplanade to watch birds and local life; visit the Flecker Botanic Gardens, full of butterflies and exotic flowers; or unwind with an ice coffee and gelato. You may wish to travel through dense rainforest via a steam train or gondola to visit the village of Kuranda.

This evening, gather with your fellow adventurers for a Farewell Dinner.
