Discovery: Transiting the Panama Canal.

Considered one of the seven wonders of the modern world, the Panama Canal is one of mankind’s greatest accomplishments and a must-see for every world traveler. The Canal was completed in 1914 through the efforts of over 80,000 workers and was one of the most difficult and largest engineering projects every undertaken. Once finished, the Panama Canal enabled ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in half the time it previously required, and now the 48-mile canal sees over 14,000 ships pass every year. Your journey cuts through Isthmus of Panama and takes about nine hours, as ships are lifted and lowered a total of approximately 170 feet through its three locks.

The ship arrives in Panama City and will overnight.

Panama City: Founded in 1519 by the Spanish conquistadors, Panama City is now one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Central America and home to incredible architectural and ethnic diversity. This diversity is reflected in the variety of culinary styles and Panamanian dishes, which are a unique blend of Spanish, African and Native American cuisine. When not dining at one of the city’s many renowned restaurants, visit the neighborhood of Casco Viejo, the historic heart of Panama City. You may also wish to see the popular Calle Uruguay district, hike through acres of national parks or visit the rainforest at Parque Natural Metropolitano, located just minutes from downtown. Of course, a trip to the Miraflores locks to watch huge ships travel along the iconic Panama Canal is always an educational highlight!

Enjoy time at leisure this evening to begin your discovery of the culture, cuisine and charms of Panama City.
