Discover the majesty of Switzerland on a journey that will take you to see lush alpine meadows, charming towns and iconic mountain peaks.

Switzerland is a gem nestled in the heart of Europe. Discover picture-perfect towns, alpine meadows and majestic mountains during fascinating excursions via cable cars, lifts and alpine railways. Settle in Interlaken, in the Alps’ Bernese Oberland. Travel by train to Kandersteg and visit Oeschinen Lake. Stroll through Lucerne and take a relaxing cruise on Lake Lucerne. A rail excursion takes you to Grindelwald and the Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge. Explore the Lauterbrunnen Valley by train or on foot — the choice is yours — and make your way to Mürren for incredible views of the Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger peaks. Visit the wood-carving center of Brienz and travel by antique steam train to see the famed Rothorn. Later, continue to Interlaken to explore this lovely town. Local guides and speakers provide fascinating insight during included excursions and lectures. This program includes first-class accommodations, a Swiss rail pass and an extensive meal plan featuring wine with dinner.

Itinerary

AHI FlexAir passengers depart for Zürich, Switzerland. Please check your luggage from your gateway city to your arrival city. Your claim checks should have the following airport code: ZRH.

Arrive at Zürich Airport. Proceed through immigration to the baggage claim area and retrieve your luggage. After completing customs, AHI FlexAir passengers traveling on flights that qualify for the group arrival transfer and Land Program passengers who have purchased seats on the group transfer should exit the baggage claim area and proceed to the designated meeting spot, where an AHI Travel representative will meet them. The meeting location will be provided with your final documents.

Transfer to the Hotel Carlton-Europe. Please note, if you arrive before check-in time, your room may not be immediately available.

Discovery: Welcome to Interlaken. Become acquainted with Interlaken, which sits between lakes Thun and Brienz, as your Travel Director takes you on an orientation tour of this picture-perfect town.

Tonight, get to know your fellow travelers at a Welcome Reception and Dinner.

Enrichment: Essential Switzerland. Discuss the iconic and unique elements of Swiss culture.

Discovery: Lake Oeschinen. Hop on a train to Kandersteg, where a gondola whisks you to Lake Oeschinen, which sits above the town at nearly 5,200 feet above sea level. Enjoy a short walk along pastures filled with wildflowers and cows grazing on the lush, green grass to the turquoise glacial lake, where you can continue your stroll or sit and enjoy the view.

By now, you’ve surely worked up an appetite. Take the gondola back to Kandersteg, where a hearty lunch awaits you.

After lunch, take the train back to Interlaken.

Free Time: The rest of the day is at leisure. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon in Interlaken.

Discovery: Lucerne. Begin the day with a train ride to Lucerne, where cobblestone streets and slender spires evoke the quintessential storybook image of a Swiss town. Explore the medieval Old Town and cross the famous chapel bridge. Cruise beautiful Lake Lucerne on a 19th-century paddle steamer.

Free Time: The afternoon is free to explore Lucerne on your own. The city is filled with old churches, charming shops and restaurants with alfresco seating. You are free to return to Interlaken on the train of your choice.

Discovery: Grindelwald. Visit the resort town of Grindelwald. In the winter, it delights skiers, and it is the summer playground for walkers, hikers and cyclists. Explore a bit before taking a Swiss PostBus, part of Switzerland’s extremely efficient rail system, through a high mountain pass.

Discovery: Step into the Hotel Rosenlaui, one of the oldest Alpine hotels, for a delicious lunch of traditional cuisine. The hotel traces its history to the 18th century, when the fledgling tourism industry emerged in the Swiss Alps.

Discovery: Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge. Tackle the trail that parallels the Weissenbach River, which rushes through the narrow gorge created by an ancient glacier.

Enrichment: Mountaineering. Switzerland enjoys a long tradition of mountain climbing. Learn about this popular pastime, which draws enthusiasts eager to tackle the challenging peaks of the Swiss Alps.

Discovery: Lauterbrunnen Valley. Enjoy a train journey to the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Here, hike to Winteregg and on to Mürren, a pretty car-free town, for some time to explore on your own. On a clear day, see the iconic North Face of the Eiger peak, as well as Mönch and Jungfrau. It is possible to continue to Mürren by train. There is time to explore Mürren on your own. If you are a James Bond fan, you may want to take the cable car (at an additional cost) up the Schilthorn, which was featured in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” Descend from Mürren by aerial cable car and take in the majestic scenery. After a short bus ride to Lauterbrunnen, return to Interlaken by train.

Tonight, enjoy a group dinner out in Interlaken.

Free Time: Enjoy a full day at leisure in Interlaken or venture out for an Alpine adventure with your Swiss rail pass in hand. Head to nearby Thun, a pretty city along the Aare River and Lake Thun, or the town of Meiringen for a hike to the Aare Gorge. Meiringen also is the location of Reichenbach Falls, made famous by Sherlock Holmes author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Another alternative is to take the funicular up Harder Kulm, the mountain overlooking Interlaken and lakes Brienz and Thun; walk to the edge of Two Lakes Bridge for a sweeping view of the turquoise lakes. An Elective Activity also is being offered today.

Elective Activity: Bern. Visit the Swiss capital of Bern, and enjoy a guided walking tour of this historic city. Some of the city’s most popular sites include the Clock Tower, Einstein House and the Cathedral of Bern, a stunning example of late Gothic architecture. Enjoy free time for lunch and exploring on your own.

Enrichment: Wines of Switzerland. Sample Swiss wines as you learn about the country’s wine industry. Nearly all Swiss wine remains in Switzerland, so it is difficult to find it outside the country.

Discovery: Brienz and the Rothorn. Enjoy the panoramic views and a breathtaking ride aboard a steam train, which climbs to the top of the Rothorn for an amazing view. Return to Brienz and take a cruise on Lake Brienz to Interlaken.

Tonight, celebrate the end of an exciting journey as a singing group entertains you with local folk songs and the Alpenhorn at a special Farewell Reception and Dinner.

After breakfast, AHI FlexAir passengers traveling on flights that qualify for a group transfer and Land Program passengers who have purchased seats on the group transfer depart for Zürich Airport for your return flights home. Your Travel Director will provide the details.
