Social media tip: Help Buckeyes find you

Imagine this scenario: An alumnus moves from Columbus to Buffalo for a new job. Far from home and family, he looks for his fellow Buckeyes in his new city. What search terms might he use? He might try and find Ohio State alumni in Buffalo by searching for things like “Ohio State,” “Buffalo,” “Buckeyes,” “alumni” or “OSU” on Facebook and Twitter.

To help fellow alumni find your club or society on social media, think about the terms you would use if you were searching for your organization online. After this, craft your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram bios using those keywords. For example, the Buffalo club’s bio would read “Buckeyes dedicated to cultivating an Ohio State family in Buffalo, NY #BuckeyeForLife.” This description has the keywords Buckeyes, Ohio State, Buffalo, NY and uses the alumni hashtag #BuckeyeForLife. For questions or more information on all things social media, contact the Alumni Association’s Michelle Morgan.

Best practices

On-boarding new board members

  • Here are some tips for on-boarding new members of your board:
  • Invite them to a meeting prior to their joining the board
  • Have a separate orientation session for them and review the mission and goals of your club/society
  • Provide them with a board member notebook with a copy of all pertinent information
  • Assign a current board member to a new board member like a “board buddy” for the first few meetings so the new board member feels welcomed
  • Be sure to steward your volunteers by being sure to show your appreciation for what they do

Share your group’s good work

Remember to share your club and society accomplishments and points of pride for consideration in Ohio State Alumni magazine. A new submission form makes the process simple and quick. The deadline is Monday, May 18, to have items considered for the July-August Buckeye Buzz page.

Study: Don’t blame kids if they don’t like school

When children are unmotivated at school, new research suggests their genes may be part of the equation.
