The Lucas County alumni club’s Robert Momsen Scholarship Fund is creating opportunity for Toledo-area students. Learn how the club has helped push its endowment past $325,000.

Alumni are invited to provide input on the university and the alumni experience by participating in this new online forum. To facilitate hearing the voice of alumni on countless Ohio State priorities, the Alumni Association has launched a new initiative called the “The Buckeye Room.” 

Nominations sought for Bailey award

Named for longtime director of international student services, Ruth C. Bailey, award nominees can be Ohio State faculty, staff, alumni, faculty/staff emeriti and university volunteers who have taken a leadership role and/or initiative in implementing policies, procedures, and/or programs to enhance interaction and understanding between multicultural and foreign-born students and/or faculty on the Ohio State campus.

Information about the Alumni Association’s 2015-16 scholarship season was sent to you in September but you can also find the information and forms online. By now you should have selectedyour scholarship committee. Accepted studentlists will be sent in lateJanuary and scholarship amount projections will be sent in early February. Martha GulatiAssociate Professor, Cardiovascular Medicine

Gulati is an associate professor of medicine and clinical public health in the Division of Cardiology at The Ohio State University. In 2012, she was awarded the National Red Dress Award for her efforts in raising awareness of heart disease in women and advancing research in this field. She is the author of the best-selling book, Saving Women’s Heart, and her commitment to the study of women and cardiac diseases has won her numerous awards and distinctions.

Both liberals, conservatives have science bias

New research suggests that liberals, as well as conservatives, can be biased against science that doesn’t align with their political views. The study found that people from both the left and right expressed less trust in science when they were presented with facts that challenged specific politicized issues.

Genetic combination can lower heart-attack risk

Researchers have determined that two mutations on a single gene can interact in a way that lowers the carrier’s risk for a heart attack. The variants are found in a gene calledDBH, which regulates an enzyme involved in the conversion of dopaminetonorepinephrine– both of which are important chemical messengers and hormones.
