Welcome, new grads!
In order to congratulate and welcome our newest SACAS members, members of the board of governors have volunteered to write personalized letters and emails to the graduating seniors of 2015. The correspondence will include information on how to stay connected to SACAS, how the alumni society supports and partners with current students and various events we host throughout the year. These letters will be sent in two waves ensuring graduates feel welcomed and informed. If you would like to welcome our newest members to SACAS, please post your messages to our Facebook page or twitter account with #welcomeSACgrads!
Our new student liaison
In spring, SAC completes its annual elections, which include the transition of our student liaison. Gina Bonfiglio, the SAC student liaison for 2014-2015, will be handing down the position to Leah Uhrig. Leah is a junior social work major who is excited to work with our society.
A huge thank you to Gina! She assisted in the planning and execution of our Founder’s Day celebration and continued to offer ways in which SAC and SACAS could partner.
First and foremost, thank you so much to those of you who completed the socials survey! We received 70+ responses, the most responses we've gotten for a socials survey thus far. After reviewing the responses, we found that most people want two to four socials per year, not including the annual meeting during Homecoming. We also received names of at least 10 people willing to plan socials in their cities. We will be contacting those individuals in order to help get the ball rolling. So take this as a call for SACAS socials! Be on the lookout for emails with details regarding your city. If you have any suggestions for future socials or want to help plan socials for your city, please do not hesitate to contact Karen at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Resume and grad school app critique
The SAC Alumni Society offered a resume and grad school application critique for SAC’ers. This year, we received 12 resumes, and Lauri Meyers matched the students with alumni in similar fields or with similar education backgrounds. Thank you to the 30 alumni who have signed up to be involved in resume critiques. We would like to keep the list growing. If you are interested in serving students in this way, you may contact Lauri Meyers at email@example.com to sign up to provide a critique or with any questions.
ELF scholarship recipient
And the winner is… Anna Talarico!! On April 11, Chelsea (Hempfling) Ricker, president of SACAS, presented current SACer Anna Talarico with the Emerging Leaders Fund Scholarship to assist her in attending the CASE/ASAP National Conference. Anna will be a third year in the fall and will serve as director of Alumni Outreach. She hopes that during her time at the conference she will learn new ways to better relate to alumni of all identities and backgrounds in order to support SAC’s expansion of diversity. After receiving the scholarship, she sent SACAS a thank you card:
Chelsea and SACAS,
I am so grateful to be the recipient of the 2015 Emerging Leaders Fund Scholarship! I am thrilled to attend the CASE/ASAP National Conference this summer on behalf of SAC, and I know that it will be an incredible opportunity to develop relationships, generate fresh ideas and engage with other institutions. Additionally, I am thankful for the work that SACAS does for current SAC members. I am honored to be part of an organization that values continued member engagement and sustainable relationships between members new and old. SAC has been and continues to be an immense part of my experience at Ohio State, and I’m looking forward to serving the organization as an alumna. Thank you again for your support and commitment to SAC!
In the SAC Spirit, Anna Talarico
Since the first student meeting of the Student-Alumni Council in 1980, our beloved student organization has celebrated its founding around February 14. The Student-Alumni Council Alumni Society is proud to report that we partnered with the current students of SAC, again this year, to plan and host a Founder’s Day celebration.
On February 12, during the regularly scheduled meeting, SACAS and our student liaison from SAC, Gina Bonfiglio, conducted a Founder’s Day Event inviting alumni of the organization back to campus to reminisce, mingle with students and enjoy a little cake. We had about 10 alumni who attended the celebration with a special SAC SHOUT OUT to Mr. Felix Alonso, longtime former advisor. He graciously accepted the request to be the “spotlight SAC Alum.” Current SAC’ers greatly enjoyed hearing his stories. We even had an honorary member attend — Ms. Susan Long.
After introducing the alumni, Chelsea Ricker spoke to the students and alumni in attendance via Google Hang-Out. She greeted the students and discussed upcoming programs within SACAS, including resume critiques and the possibility of enacting a HOST program between current SAC’ers and alumni. Pamphlets providing more information about SACAS were on hand for any interested senior member of SAC. Additionally, Gina gave a short presentation on the history and recent developments within SAC.
To close, all those in attendance sang “Carmen Ohio,” and alumni were invited to Eddie George’s for drinks following the meeting.
Governor of Communications
Our current Governor of Communications for SACAS is stepping down; thus, we are looking for someone to assume that role. This position oversees the production of our newsletters, manages our social media and gmail accounts, and attends and records minutes for our monthly board meetings. If you or someone you know is interested in this position, please email Chelsea Ricker at firstname.lastname@example.org.
