Celebrate the chimes’ centennial

The Orton Hall Chimes have been part of the Ohio State experience for 100 years. A campus celebration on February 11 will mark their centennial.

Six graduating classes between 1906 and 1914 funded the chimes’ $8,000 cost, and a huge campus celebration accompanied their debut. Today — as they have for generations — the chimes play portions of Westminster Chimes every quarter hour and all four bars on the hour.

The Ohio Staters organization will host the 100th anniversary celebration, which will feature the playing of “Carmen Ohio” on the Oval at noon and a 5:30 p.m. event in Orton Hall that includes tours of the bell tower and a display of artifacts.
