Rose Bowl memories
Ohio State has won the 2019 Rose Bowl! The storied college football game had special significance for Ohio State and the alumni association this year.
The Ohio State Buckeyes have won their 15th Rose Bowl, defeating the University of Washington Huskies 28-23 on New Year’s Day in Pasadena, California. The game also marked a special anniversary for the Ohio State alumni association, which launched its popular tours 50 years ago with — you guessed it — a trip to the 1969 Rose Bowl to see Ohio State and the Super Sophs “squeeze” O.J. Simpson and the University of Southern California Trojans.
In 2019, some of those same alumni made that very same trip to watch their beloved Buckeyes take on the Huskies. It is, says Debbie Vargo, director of alumni tours, “the perfect bookend anniversary trip to celebrate the alumni association’s longest-standing program.”
In this collection of first-person stories, we hear from some alumni who have traveled to the Rose Bowl with the alumni association and who have just made the journey once more. Take a trip down memory lane with them!
Barbara Rigg Cordell ’71 joined the student tour to the 1969 Rose Bowl — and still has the ID to prove she was there.
Cathy Smith Sankey ’75 and Jeff Sankey ’75 have traveled to the Rose Bowl several times over the years, creating poignant, thrilling and touching memories along the way.
Dr. Harold L. Voss ’66, ’70 DDS was Rose Bowl-bound in late 1968 — until he remembered what he’d been saving the ticket and travel money for. Fifty years later, he finally got his game.
