2020 Vision
|
During his first months as Ohio State’s 15th president, Michael V. Drake looked, listened and learned.
With time, his observations developed into a vision for the university, a path firmly grounded in Ohio State’s land-grant mission but one that also acknowledges the challenges of the modern-day world. Drake unveiled the plan during his investiture ceremony March 31, sharing a message of inclusive excellence with more than 1,500 guests in attendance and thousands more watching online from 38 countries.
Drake outlined the focus areas Ohio State will tackle in the next five years — access, affordability and teaching excellence; community engagement; and diversity and inclusion. In today’s world, he noted, “The university must continue to be a beacon that illuminates the clearest path to the American Dream.”

Investment in innovation
|
From anti-cancer drugs to chemical warfare antidotes to energy-efficient materials, Ohio State’s new CBEC building will enhance the university’s already leading-edge work in many different areas. The new facility, part of the university’s framework plan, had its grand opening in April, which was a chance to recognize its promise and acknowledge those who helped make it happen.

Like oil and water
|
The piece of stainless steel mesh in a lab at Ohio State doesn’t look like a very big deal, but it could make a significant difference for future environmental cleanups. Water passes through the mesh but oil doesn’t, thanks to a nearly invisible oil-repelling coating on its surface.

A magnetic discovery
|
Heat, it turns out, has a magnetic personality. As strange as it may sound, Ohio State researchers have discovered – for the first time ever – that a magnet can control heat. “This adds a new dimension to our understanding of acoustic waves,” said Joseph Heremans, Ohio Eminent Scholar in Nanotechnology and professor of mechanical engineering.

Solving the most pressing neurological disorders. Next year, the Wexner Medical Center will open a new hospital to meet the growing needs for services for patients with neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. As part of Ohio State’s Neurological Institute, services and research at the Brain and Spine Hospital will improve the diagnosis, treatment and likelihood of finding a cure for these diseases.
