Top 5. Ohio State is ranked fourth in the nation among research universities and is a top producer of Fulbright U.S. Scholars for the 2017-18 academic year, according to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Nine Buckeye scholars were awarded Fulbright grants in the past year. The program is the government's flagship international educational exchange program.

Making history. Track and field director Karen Dennis entered the record book by becoming the first female to win the Men's Big Ten Indoor Coach of the Year award — just days after leading the Buckeyes to their first Big Ten Indoor Championship since 1993. Dennis has been at Ohio State for 16 seasons, having previously coached the U.S. women's national team at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

Excellence by — and beyond — the numbers. Ohio State's biomedical research community exceeds the national average in several measures. Last year, 19 faculty received their first National Institutes of Health Research Project Grant; in a more typical year, it would be four or five. Overall, NIH funding to the university's medical enterprise grew 20 percent. For the kids. BuckeyeThon, the university's largest student-run philanthropic organization, raised more than $1.6 million to support the fight against pediatric cancer — culminating in a 24-hour dance marathon that brought together thousands of college students with young patients and their families. The single-year mark was a new record. Since 2001, BuckeyeThon has raised more than $8 million.

In (very) good company. Faculty Richard Fishel, cancer biology and genetics, and Shan-Lu Liu, veterinary biosciences, have been elected fellows of the American Academy of Microbiology — one of the field’s top honors. Professor of Finance Ingrid Werner, meanwhile, is now part of a prestigious group selecting candidates for what is considered to be the Nobel Prize for economics.
