New record (again). Ohio State awarded a record 12,213 degrees and certificates to the largest graduating class in university history at spring commencement in Ohio Stadium. The 2019 graduating class size is the largest for the fifth consecutive year. Approximately 1,800 baccalaureate degree recipients were the first in their families to earn a college degree.
For the win. Four Ohio State teams — football, women's golf, women's soccer and men's tennis — have been honored for academic performance. The NCAA's Public Recognition Awards are given each year to teams scoring in the top 10% in each sport based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates, which track student-athlete retention and success in the classroom.
Top honors. Two faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, honoring excellence and leadership in their fields. A professor in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences received the 2019 Japan Prize, one of the most prestigious honors in science and technology. Broadly, 159 awards and recognitions were reported across all Ohio State faculty — a new university record and up 14% over last year.
Improving lives. The Ohio Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation has recognized the university's program at Martha Morehouse Outpatient Care as the best of 2019. Ohio State is also helping to lead efforts to reduce Ohio's infant mortality rate. At the Wexner Medical Center, infant mortality has fallen by more than half since 2011, even as Ohio State remains the destination for central Ohio's most high-risk pregnancies..
More student kudos. Four honors students have been named 2019 Goldwater Scholars, the most prestigious national award for undergraduate researchers in science, mathematics and engineering. The student recipients represent fields ranging from chemistry and physics to electrical and computer engineering. This marks the second time in Ohio State history that all four nominees received the award.
