When we hear the word “concussion,” many immediately think of sports injuries. But many who work in law enforcement are at a severely high risk of receiving a traumatic brain injury. And many of them go unreported and untreated. In this episode, we talk with two people who are working together to bring this underserved community the help and treatment it needs.

Jaclyn Caccese PhD
Caccese is an assistant professor in Ohio State’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the Wexner Medical Center. She is also an investigator in Ohio State’s Chronic Brain Injury Program. Though her research typically examines traumatic brain injuries in athletes, her recent landmark study on blunt head impacts in law enforcement cadets raised attention to an often-overlooked area of public safety.

Josh Walters
Walters is a deputy in the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office where he leads a peer support team that works with fellow deputies experiencing a range of problems. His work with Caccese and the CBI Program grew out of the peer group’s long-term partnership with Ohio State researchers and clinicians to enhance deputy health.
