Student Veteran Advocates meet T. Boone Pickens and Les Wexner

Veteran Advocates with James Miller, T. Boone Pickner, and Les Wexner
James D. Miller, who established the Major Lawrence Miller Military Fund in the Office of Military and Veteran Services in honor of his father, sponsored a group of student veterans to attend the Jefferson Series at the New Albany Foundation this past month. The Jefferson Series, a collection of forums "featuring some of the world's most compelling and esteemed thinkers of our time," debuted on February 5, 2014. The inaugural event featured a roundtable discussion between two highly successful yet distinct American businessmen, T. Boone Pickens, American business magnate and financier, and Ohio State's own Les Wexner, founder of the Limited Brands and community philanthropist.

Miller is the lead volunteer for the Office of Military and Veteran Services and an active and engaged participant in Ohio State's military and veteran community success. Determined to provide networking and career engagement for the veteran community, he actively seeks opportunities to introduce student veterans to established and driven members of the Central Ohio community. Prior to the roundtable discussion, Miller hosted a select group of students for a private reception at which they socialized with both the featured speakers and distinguished members of the community.

Current student veteran and member of the first cohort of Veteran Community Advocates, Meagan Day expressed "Meeting Mr. Pickens and Mr. Wexner was one of the highlights of my time as a Student Veteran Advocate. Hearing about the obstacles each overcame in their early careers was inspiring. And hearing the passion in each man's story as they discussed not only their professional lives, but their past and present philanthropic efforts--it was obvious what an exemplary leader each man is in both his industry and his community." Day, a recipient of the Jack W. Liebert Family Veteran Community Advocate Scholarship, is a graduate student in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and is currently exploring the health and wellness needs of the veteran community through her work with the Student Health Center & Office of Student Wellness.

Ohio State's Office of Military and Veterans Services is the university's single point of contact for our veteran and military students. Ohio State's military and veteran students' programs are nationally recognized. In Best for Vets: Colleges 2014, the publication ranked Ohio State 18th among four-year colleges, and gave four stars to the university for academic support and extra-curricular. The office ensures Ohio State provides our increasing population of military and veteran students with help accessing their educational benefits and optimal resources.

Along with the resources provided by the Office of Military and Veteran Services, dedicated volunteers like Jim Miller ensure that the Ohio State Buckeye Military Family has the means to gain both academic success and a rich student experience. The Ohio State University's efforts to support veteran and military initiatives on campus are continuously bolstered by the dedication of our community.
