OSU Naval ROTC Color Parade
OSU Naval ROTC Color Parade

Every year, the personnel of The Ohio State University Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps come together to host the “Color Parade” for family and friends to honor the achievements of the midshipmen and officer candidates.

This year, forty-two awards including $21,000 in scholarships were given to recognize the students for their accomplishments during this academic year. Many organizations that sponsor these awards sent representatives to the Color Parade ceremony to present their awards. These groups included the OSU Naval ROTC alumni, the Columbus Chapter of the Navy League, the Marine Corps League and the American Legion among others. Numerous Midshipmen received scholarships for their efforts in military aptitude, academics and physical fitness with Midshipman 1/C Benjamin Fite receiving the Chief of Naval Operations Distinguished Graduate award. The Guest of Honor, Major General C. Dean Sangalis, United States Marine Corps (ret.), a distinguished alumnus of the Ohio State Naval ROTC and a member of the NROTC Hall of Fame, inspired the Midshipmen with his insightful career advice and knowledge citing the example of John Wooden, the legendary basketball coach at UCLA, as one worthy of emulating.

Furthermore, the NROTC Unit celebrated the retirement ceremony of Captain Michael H. Glaser after thirty years of active duty. Captain Glaser concluded his career as the Commanding Officer of the Ohio State NROTC after starting his career as a midshipman at Miami University thus beginning and ending his career in Ohio. After a invocation by the Navy League’s National Chaplain, Captain Herb Goetz (CHC, USN (ret)), Commander Swartz presented Captain Glaser with the Legion of Merit and retirement certificate among other awards on behalf of President Barak Obama and Admiral Jonathon Greenert, Chief of Naval Operations. Captain Glaser was also honored by the Ohio State Naval ROTC alumni represented by RADM David Ozvat, ONM (ret), and the Columbus Chapter of the Navy League represented by their president Mr. Udo Maroscher.

The retirement ceremony for Captain Glaser was a wonderful opportunity for the Midshipmen to be motivated by the career accomplishments of a retiring officer as they continue to progress to their future careers as Officers in the Navy and Marine Corps as well.
