"Coming Home" Event Honored Major Lawrence Miller

"Coming Home" Event Honored Major Lawrence Miller
A strong commitment to the military has always been a key element of the student experience at Ohio State. Over the past three years, that commitment has been powerfully demonstrated by a dedicated group of alumni and community friends through annual "Coming Home" events in support of Ohio State veterans and their families.

The "Coming Home" event was initially established as a philanthropic gathering to honor the life and service of two-time Ohio State alumnus, Major Lawrence Miller. Major Miller, along with his wife and three children, found a home at Ohio State while receiving both his Bachelors and Masters degrees. Since the first event, friends and community members have generously provided their time, energy, and consideration to provide countless veterans on Ohio State's campus a genuine feeling of family and community warmth.

On the evening of November 13th, dear friends of Ohio State, Barb and Philip Derrow, graciously hosted veteran students, community partners, ROTC students, and friends of the Buckeye Military Family at their home in support and celebration of the important military and veteran initiatives at the university. The Derrows warmly welcomed guests and echoed the sentiment of community commitment that has been prevalent at every event.

Over one hundred guests were delighted to hear from Interim President Joseph Alutto who shared the university's unwavering support of the Buckeye Military Family and from Veteran Community Advocate Meagan Day who explained her own personal experience at Ohio State. Throughout the night, guests heard stories of how generous gifts of time, talent, and treasure make an impact on veterans across campus, directly from Ohio State veterans.

Individuals made gifts in honor of Major Miller to the Major Lawrence Miller Military Fund, which is administered by The Office of Military and Veteran Services, to further these initiatives on campus. The fund has been utilized to establish Veteran Community Advocate Program scholarships, provide resources to ensure academic success and enhance the student experience, fund the renovation of the Ohio State Student Veteran Home, and support scholarships for commendable ROTC students.

The Ohio State University is committed to creating the extraordinary student experience for everyone at Ohio State, and that certainly includes veteran students in our Buckeye Military Family. We owe them nothing less.
