"On
Record" Candid interviews for the Ohio State community with President Kirwan Question #7: How will the university be able to benchmark to a persons specific duties? President Kirwan: Im not sure we can benchmark individual duties. We have a general sense of what faculty members responsibilities are. Well start first with faculty. Basically, what we want to do is to see - programmatic area by programmatic area - how do we compare against our competition? So, for example, speaking first about faculty, were going to look at our business school, and see how our business school faculty salaries compare to the business school salaries within our peer institutions. Our English faculty how their salaries compare? Were going to look at this discipline-by-discipline, rather than having some across the board approach, because I think we have to recognize there are market forces at work. If, for example, our English and history faculty are more out of line with the competition - the faculty they compete with - then we have to put some special focus on boosting those salaries. So, it will be more of a disciplinary comparison than individual faculty one. Now in regard to staff, we collect a lot of data comparing job descriptions with job descriptions at other Ohio universities, in state government, and in the private sector in Ohio. Here we benchmark job categories against the competition. In this case, it would be employment opportunities for staff in central Ohio, and in Ohio. Here again, we want to be market competitive and get at least to the median level of these job categories as a first step towards a more generous compensation, more appropriate I should say, compensation for our staff. |
