A recent study from The Ohio State University found parents discipline their kids more harshly when they drink during the Super Bowl than those who abstain from alcohol.

Bridget Freisthler, a professor of social work at Ohio State, says most studies focus exclusively on men and their drinking and discipline habits.

However, this is the first study the team is aware of that shows women may also act more aggressively when combining consumption of alcohol and watching violent sports.

“When you add stress and alcohol, that is not a good combination,” she says. “We think drinking on special occasions deserves more attention.”

Parents can take steps before special occasions, such as the Super Bowl or July 4 celebrations. For example, choosing one parent to stay sober or hiring a sitter are good options.
