Honoring Veterans

November 07, 2012

On Veterans Day, Ohio State salutes servicemen and women at home (more than 3,000 on campus) and around the world.

In the Air Force, Anthony Dent was a cryptologic linguist who deployed to southwest Asia and Kyrgyzstan.

Dent knew he wanted to get a college degree after his service; now, he's a biochemistry major at Ohio State. He was also an instrumental part of helping open the new Office of Military and Veterans Services.

The office is a one-stop shop for student veterans--but also a place where they can get support navigating the transition back to civilian life. And it's among the reasons Ohio State was recently named a top-10 college for veterans.

"We're trying to make it a home for veterans to walk into," says Mike Carrell, director of the office. "There are huge transitions for them--becoming a college student, leaving the military and civilian life, and coming from combat. This is about serving people."

Ohio State formally honors Buckeye veterans at the annual Rock Ceremony, an Army ROTC tradition (Nov. 8, 10:30 a.m., in front of Bricker Hall).

Find out more about a few Buckeye veterans--and see how Ohio State is honoring our military:

  • "Whether in Hawaii, Alaska, or in Baghdad, I always knew that there was a fellow Buckeye not far away." Find out about the career of Colonel Kelley Crooks, Class of 1978, and read an Alumni Magazine essay by his brother and fellow veteran Kerry Crooks, Class of 1979.
  • "Unlike any other profession, ours comes with the realization that we may pay the ultimate price thousands of miles from home in a foreign land." Richard Hughes, Class of 1988, writes about how he helped a fallen soldier receive a hero's send-off far from home.
  • Captain Nick Andrews, Class of 2006, recently celebrated his return home from Afghanistan with this O-H-I-O photo with his parents. Andrews serves with the Army's 82nd Airborne Division. See the collection of O-H-I-O photos submitted by our servicemen and women.
  • The Buckeyes are honoring our military: TBDBITL performed a half-time salute to armed forces during the Nov. 3 Ohio State football game, and the basketball season will open at the Carrier Classic onboard the USS Yorktown on Nov. 9. (See the "military shout outs" shown during Buckeyes games.)
