The Bernard Deutchman Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund

Deutchman

The Bernard Deutchman Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2015 as a scholarship for veterans who have exhausted all other veteran's educational assistance and have an interest in business. Bernard attended The Ohio State University on a wrestling scholarship before his education was interrupted by the draft. He completed his education elsewhere after the war but had first-hand knowledge of how important "emergency" funding is for veterans nearing the end of their educational benefits.

Bernard's son Jim, the impetus of starting the scholarship, has a vision for the family's gift and its future impact. He wants to continue to help students in need of financial assistance and would eventually like to fund four students, one in each year - a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. "This is my responsibility," Jim reflects on what he feels he owes back to Ohio State. "My dad was able to go because he got a scholarship. He'd be proud of this." Jim's sister Debbie feels the same, "once you attend the scholarship reception and have an opportunity to meet the students who benefit, it's all so worth it. Our dad would be incredibly proud."
