Explore the growing mental health crisis in farming communities, including the causes of rising mental health issues, and how efforts are being made to provide the support they need.

Bridget Britton is a behavioral health field specialist for OSU Extension's Agriculture and Natural Resources program. She raises awareness about farm stress and its impact on mental health.

“Farmers face stressors like isolation, unpredictable weather and economic pressures. These factors, combined with a lack of resources, contribute to rising mental health issues.”

“There’s stigma in rural communities around seeking mental health help. Farmers often worry about being judged by others, which stops them from reaching out.”

Aaron Wilson is an atmospheric scientist at Ohio State. He helps farmers adapt and navigate  the impacts weather has on agriculture.

Aaron Wilson

"Weather impacts everything we do," says Wilson, explaining the link between farmers and unpredictable weather. "Farmers' livelihoods are directly tied to conditions they can't control."

Wilson breaks down the differences: "Weather is immediate; climate is the long-term pattern. Both are affecting agriculture in Ohio more than ever, especially with rising extremes."
