We talk with an Ohio State professor and a Pat Tillman Foundation Military Scholar about how to be thoughtful with others in a world full of uncomfortable conversations and heated arguments.

Gretchen Klingler '19 has degrees in cultural anthropology and Arabic. She is a senior veterans manager at a bipartisan coalition to promote civil conversations before resorting to violence.

Gretchen says to bridge gaps between political views, people need to speak and be heard. “Without people feeling like they are heard and respected, it is impossible to build a community.”

Combining the hard power of the military and the soft power of diplomacy, we can create smart power and promote a more peaceful society that doesn't resort to violence.

“I don't go into conversations to change people's minds. I just want them to understand where I'm coming from.”
