Champs, on and off the field

January 22, 2015

Whether they're heading toward the end zone or seeking a cure for cancer, Buckeyes unite to do great things.

Ohio State's Jan. 12 victory in the first College Football Playoff National Championship sealed the football team's reputation as champs. All year, university faculty, staff, students and alumni show their academic credentials in classrooms and research labs.

"We belong to a wonderful and very special community," says President Michael V. Drake. "How firm thy friendship!

Read on for some examples of how Buckeyes are winning, on and off the field.

A research powerhouse, built on teamwork

At Ohio State, teamwork is key. See how Buckeye research is creating a better world:

Winning with people: Smart Buckeyes

Ohio State's Class of 2018 is one of the most outstanding first-year classes in university history; it includes students from all 88 Ohio counties, 49 states and 33 countries. "The professors are really welcoming and they care about you as a person," says first-year student Ben Steingass. See the faces and read the stories behind the numbers.

Ohio State faculty and staff have their own bragging rights: The university topped The Chronicle of Higher Education's last ranking of top Fulbright scholars at research universities, with 14 scholars around the world. And six Ohio State faculty were recently elected as Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a worldwide mark of academic distinction among peers.

Alumni – we have 500,000 – go on to do fantastic things, from winning Oscars for their digital animation work to creating international opportunities at Ohio State's three Global Gateways.

Using academic success to pay forward

Ohio State leads in health innovation; we're the only major university to have seven health sciences colleges and an academic medical center on a single campus. These institutions are widely respected among peers: The Wexner Medical Center, for instance, has been named one of the "100 Greatest Hospitals in America" (Becker's Hospital Review).

Faculty, staff and students in the health care field use their knowledge to create a healthier world, starting at home.

Some examples: A 45-foot mobile dental clinic, where student dentists provide free exams to Columbus school children; the Moms2B program, with its goal of reducing infant mortality through education and health care; and JamesCare Mammography stations throughout the city, making the latest digital screening mammography easily accessible around Columbus.
