Arina Xiong: Moving from China to find her career path overseas

Irina is a fifth-year student from southern China whose journey at The Ohio State University began in uncertainty but led to a community, a marketing career path, and a campus where she feels safe and supported.

Question:
Did you discover your career path while at Ohio State?

Answer:

I switched my major from psychology to marketing, so now I’ve found my true passion. Professionally and academically, I learned a lot about marketing and had the opportunities and resources to find a job. With the Ohio State career services team, I was able to revise my resume, find more internship opportunities and get a lot of advice.

Question:
Why did you choose Ohio State? Did you know anyone?

Answer:

No. I didn’t know anybody. I came to Ohio State because it’s a big campus and I was really attracted to the game-day experience. Watching a game in the stadium is super fun. It’s also close to New York. It’s only a one-hour flight, so it’s close but not as expensive. I love that a lot.

Ohio State is not how I thought America would be. The university has given me a special experience where I feel kindness, friendship, community and support. I know I am a Buckeye when I am out of state, and people shout to me ‘O‑H!’

Question:
What made Ohio State feel like home?

Answer:

Getting a job (the Dennis Learning Center on campus), dancing, and our community here — people are always supporting each other. It gives me a really strong sense of belonging.

Question:
Does Ohio State offer a well-rounded student experience?

Answer:

I think Ohio State offers a good package — the gym, RPAC, empty spaces to study, and meeting rooms for interviews. Ohio State really has it all.

As an international student, the campus feels safe and chill. You have places where you can relax.

Ohio State student Arina Xiong said she feels “kindness, friendship, community and support” from the university community. (Ohio State)

Question:
What advice would you give an international student coming to the United States?

Answer:

I would suggest that they step out of their comfort zone, make friends with local classmates, participate in more events, and explore resources and opportunities. If you encounter problems, there is always someone who can help you.
