Katie Tibbals: Personal touch helping her succeed at Marion campus
Katie is a third-year student at Ohio State’s Marion campus. She returned to the Marion campus after transitioning to the Columbus campus, and we sat down with her to learn more about her unique journey.
Question:Did you originally expect to start your Buckeye journey on a regional campus?
I originally applied to the Columbus campus. However, once I got onto my regional campus, I understood the community here. It was something that was unexpected, and it really made me flip my mindset about what a regional campus would be like.
Question:How would you describe the Ohio State regional campus experience?
Since I transitioned to the Columbus campus and have now come back to a regional campus, I truly understand what we have here. I see faces I know every day, and professors I’ve had since freshman year still care about me as a student and as a person. It’s nice to go into the café and see other students that I know, speak with them, grab a coffee, and chat.
“Ultimately, I'd encourage someone considering a regional campus to give it a chance.”Katie TibbalsOhio State psychology majorQuestion:What kind of resources and support are available on a regional campus?
Our campus is really focused on offering one-on-one tutoring or office hours. There’s no embarrassment, and you don’t have to walk far to get to a tutor.
The regional campuses do provide the resources that we need. I like to say, “We’re small but mighty.” We use our facilities to their fullest — the gym, the study spaces, the Student Center, and the library. We have the Academic Success Center, peer coaches running snack and study sessions, and plenty of areas for study groups or meetings with professors.

Question:What has surprised you most about your experience on a regional campus?
What surprised me about being on a regional campus at Ohio State is the opportunities that I’ve been given. I started here my freshman year as a student worker and am now a student assistant. I’ve gotten to plan student events, build community, and really play a role in the development of campus departments.
Question:What would you tell a high school senior who isn't sure about starting at an Ohio State regional campus?
I was close-minded at first, but when I came here, I realized that the community on a smaller campus is so important and so impactful. I found my best friend here — I’ll be in her wedding in a couple of months.
