Malachi Talbert: Finding his home at Ohio State Lima

Malachi is a second-year student at Ohio State’s Lima campus.  He plans to complete his degree in Lima and pursue graduate school, on his way to a career in medicine, and we wanted to know more:

Question:
Why did you decide to apply directly to one of Ohio State's regional campuses?

Answer:

I chose an Ohio State regional campus because it was the most cost-effective option for me and offered a great education. Staying close to home lets me help my mom and younger siblings while still working toward my own goals. Growing up, I always wanted to be a Buckeye.

Question:
How has the smaller campus in a regional setting supported your goals?

Answer:

Starting on a regional campus has been one of the best options for going into medicine.

The smaller setting makes it easier to get the exact classes you need, and having access to core courses early on has been a big advantage. I have been able to focus on preparing for admissions testing (MCAT / OAT), which has made me lean toward finishing my degree here.

Question:
How have you been able to build professional connections on a regional campus?

Answer:

Staying on a regional campus has helped me build relationships with physicians in the area. If I had gone to Columbus, I might not have built those same connections. For what I want to do, that’s been really valuable as I look toward medical school and what comes after. The smaller setting has helped me stay focused.

Question:
Can you talk about your role as a Military Community Advocate?

Answer:

I’m the MCA on campus, which means I oversee programming for all our military-connected students, veterans and dependents like myself. We’ve been able to transform the program with events, support activities and even a new t-shirt design. I also hold weekly office hours for questions about benefits and tutoring.

Ohio State student Malachi Talbert (center) said his regional campus experience has helped prepare him for medical school.

Question:
What is the environment/vibe of a regional campus like?

Answer:

Being on a regional campus, you don’t miss a beat when it comes to being a Buckeye. We have our own traditions and yearly events, and you still get that Ohio State feeling. There’s always something going on that keeps you connected.

The moment I really felt like a Buckeye was at Taste of OSU. It brings together students from all the regional campuses and Columbus, and you get to try food from different cultures. Talking with people from different places and realizing we all share the same Buckeye experience — that was the moment for me.

Welcome to the family!

Congratulations, Buckeye! Here's what to do next.
