Sphinx love stories
We’re excited to share special “Sphinx love” stories that have grown out of a program so near and dear to our hearts. We look back fondly on our own Sphinx experiences and are committed to keeping these meaningful traditions alive. Check out these stories below!
Stacie and Derek first met in high school, but their Buckeye love story truly began during their time at The Ohio State University. Both enrolled in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences — Derek as an Agriscience Education major and Stacie as an Agricultural Communication major — where their shared passion for agriculture and leadership quickly connected them.
Together, they were deeply involved in student life within CFAES, serving as officers in Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow, the Agricultural Education Society, and the CFAES Student Council, along with many other agriculture-rooted organizations. Derek was linked into in addition to her SPHINX experience, Stacie was selected to serve as the undergraduate student representative on the Ohio State Board of Trustees, where she advocated for student safety, campus improvements, and participated in the hiring of a new university president. Both Stacie and Derek credit their Ohio State experiences with preparing them for lives rooted in leadership, service, and entrepreneurship.
Today, Stacie owns and operates McCracken Consulting, a strategic marketing and communications firm serving agricultural clients worldwide. Derek founded The Owl’s Nest, a curriculum and educational services company that develops resources for teachers and organizations across the country. Stacie and Derek now live in western Ohio with their four children — continuing a Buckeye legacy built on shared values, purpose, and love.

Niko McMurray (104) and Mary Guido (107) both grew up outside of Cleveland but it wasn't until they were both living and working in Washington, D.C. that they met on a fellow Buckeye's rooftop. Mary had remembered seeing Niko at a linking night party and they quickly became good friends. Fast forward three years and they started dating - Niko popped the question at Sphinx Plaza in spring 2018. They were married on May 30, 2020, in a self-uniting ceremony in Washington, D.C., and since it was the peak of the pandemic, their photographer was their only guest. They said their vows at Tregaron Conservancy and came back to their home in D.C.'s Adams Morgan neighborhood for a toast, cake cutting and first dance. Mary and Niko just celebrated five years of marriage on a belated honeymoon in SE Asia (Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand) this past holiday season.
