I’m a recipient of the Young Scholars Program Scholarship. YSP is a comprehensive program designed to enhance the academic and personal career success of its scholars, before, during and after college. It’s a first-generation, need-based scholarship assistance program that partners with The Ohio State University and is operated through Ohio State’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The program recruits scholars from eight cities across Ohio.

I am from Youngstown, OH, and I was an original inductee of the program back when they started recruiting younger scholars in sixth grade, also known as “pre-young” scholars. As time passed after I joined the program, I and scholars from the other cities would visit Ohio State’s campus during the summers of eighth grade and our junior and senior years of high school.

Growing up, I personally didn’t experience all the best influences, but I definitely encountered some good influences along the way as well. Throughout my time at YSP, I met a few of my closest friends and formed some strong bonds with staff members, too.

“None of this would’ve been possible without receiving the Young Scholars Program Scholarship.”

Malik Davis, fourth-year psychology major

As a student, Ohio State has supported me as I’ve grown in maturity, leadership and communication. None of this would’ve been possible without receiving the Young Scholars Program Scholarship. YSP played a significant role in helping me become a part of a tight-knit community with others, in and out of  the program. In all, YSP is the reason I was able to leave my hometown and explore a new environment, and garner a better perspective on how I can overcome obstacles not just in school, but also in life.
